ELKIN — Yoga on Main in Elkin will host “Stretch it Out Saturday” on June 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in celebration of International Yoga Day. A portion of Main Street outside the Yoga on Main studio, located at 122 E. Main St., will be blocked off for this mini-festival/open house event which will feature free yoga classes, food vendors and more.
Yoga on Main typically hosts an open house each year on New Year’s Day but was not able to last year due to the pandemic. Studio owner and yoga teacher Kelly Dougherty said this outdoor and expanded open house event is geared to bring in more community participation and introduce newcomers to the practice of yoga.
“Our goal is to have people that have never tried yoga come see what it’s all about,” said Dougherty.
There will be kids classes, family yoga sessions, family Zumba, as well as yin yoga, flow yoga, core barre and more.
“The cool thing about this is we are going to be doing a little sampling of all of our classes and all the different types of yoga that we offer, so it’s a great time to see what style works best for you,” Dougherty said. “All the classes we are going to offer that day are great for any level, especially people that have never done yoga.”
Dougherty said flexibility is not a requirement to do yoga, as many people believe.
“The goal is to do yoga and that helps build flexibility in the body. It also helps with awareness, how you breathe, and how you move,” she said.
The event is free but there will be $1 raffle tickets available for yoga class cards, yoga gear and more. Raffle proceeds will benefit The ARK and the Kids Bucks program at the Farmers Market.
“We encourage people to bring a chair, bring a yoga mat, they don’t have to participate they can just come and hang out in a relaxed atmosphere if they choose,” Dougherty said.
