Mangeshkar, who is widely regarded as one of the best playback singers in Indian cinema, began her professional singing career at the age of 13 in 1942. “Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jana Sanam ,” “Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna,” “Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Mann Mera,” and “Pyar kiya to darna” are among the many notable songs she has performed over her nearly seven-decade career.
As part of her long and successful career that extended over half a century, she provided her beautiful voice to many Bollywood lip-syncing performers. As one of the most sought-after vocalists in India, she earned the title “Nightingale of Bollywood,” “Nightingale of India,” or “Melody Queen of India.”
In addition to the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, she has received several other honors and recognitions, including The Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan, and the Dada Saheb Phalke Award.

After the news of her death broke, tributes to Lata Mangeshkar flooded in, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying “anguish beyond words” at her passing. Apart from her 25,000 songs, each of which was a lesson in discipline, tenacity, and skill, she was able to bring India and Pakistan to a universal agreement on one point: the power of her voice and melody. In terms of recognizing the magic of Lata Mangeshkar’s voice, there is a special relationship between the people of the two nations.
In addition to her extraordinary vocal range (four octaves), Lata Mangeshkar was well-known for her ability to sing in character, adjusting her tone and expression to match the feelings of the character she was portraying on screen. Live performances were also a part of Ms. Mangeshkar’s career; she typically appeared on stage in a subtle white or cream sari. Following India’s war with China in 1962, it is reported that Jawaharlal Nehru was moved to tears by her rendition of a patriotic Hindi song, “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon.”

In December 2021, Mangeshkar celebrated the eightieth anniversary of her radio broadcasting début and tweeted in Hindi: “On 16 December 1941, I sang two songs for the first time in the studio for radio after seeking the blessings of my parents. It has been 80 years today. In these 80 years, I have got immense love and blessings from the people. I believe that I will always keep getting your love and blessings.”
Lata Ji never married. She has four siblings (Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Khadikar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar), all of whom are outstanding singers and musicians.
