Cryptocurrency scammers cost Tecumseh resident $70,000, say OPP

Essex County OPP are warning the public to be vigilant about scammers after a Tecumseh resident was bilked out of $70,000 in a cryptocurrency investment scheme.

According to a release from OPP on Monday, the victim became involved in an online cryptocurrency brokerage and was convinced to invest funds.

“At this time, the victim is not able to retrieve their money from the investments,” OPP said.

Essex County OPP’s crime unit has taken up the investigation due to the large amount of money that is missing — more than $70,000.

While cryptocurrency is a relatively new angle for scammers, OPP reminds citizens of some tried and true advice to avoid being defrauded.

Never give out personal information to unknown parties. Verify all contact information when communicating with someone. Keep a close eye on your bank account and credit cards. Take your own time and do some research when approached about a so-called opportunity.

And don’t automatically trust the name on a caller display: It could be false.
