Cognitive Bias

Cognitive Bias

The interpretation of human-level explanations by humans complicates the computation of AI systems in ML

The study of human cognition at its most fundamental level, known as basic cognitive processing, is called cognitive science. Psychology, neurology, and cognitive neuroscience are the main fields of study for cognitive science. Many of their discoveries have significant applications to AI, namely the discipline of machine learning. Interestingly, research in neurophysiology and micro-mapping supports the notion that complex mental operations can be explained at the system level. AI systems operate in many ways like simplified versions of our brains.

Every day, AI becomes more intelligent. AI will be liable to the same restrictions as people if it attains a level of intelligence similar to that of humans. The interpretation and formation of human-level explanations by humans complicate the computation of AI systems in ML. Principles of intuition and brain research suggest that people have particular preferences for interpreting facts even before they express them. But if we rely on AI too much, we risk underestimating the importance of human behavior. Furthermore, even while AI systems are improving in a myriad of ways, we still do not fully understand how humans accomplish similar but more difficult tasks in these fields. Even when we attempt to define what is “human,” the distinctions become increasingly hazy.

The availability heuristic, which asserts that people typically depend more on data that confirms their present ideas, is a notable cognitive bias when it relates to AI choices. We frequently gravitate toward the most relevant or logical interpretation of the given evidence when faced with conflicting or ambiguous data. This tactic may work in certain circumstances, but in many, it can lead to an unbreakable unending loop of failure. Memory leakages, which happen when algorithms depend heavily on heuristics for decision-making and end up depending on irrelevant or outdated information, are a classic example.

Humans prefer to use heuristics while making decisions, which is easy to observe (or so we believe), but these biases are automatic and unconscious, making them challenging to identify. There is every reason to think that humans have been utilizing biases in daily life since the days of the hunter-gatherer culture for a very long time. Many of the skills that humans possess today, such as language and math, have already been acquired with the aid of various learning strategies, such as mirroring. Learning information is not difficult. Our brain can swiftly decode it.

To assert that bias still plays a small role in human decision-making would be incorrect. Even though improved filtering methods are constantly being developed, there is currently no single solution for AI advancement. We are aware that AI and human minds are both still susceptible to error. This implies that no AI system will ever completely replace a person in any of its computations, regardless of how proficient neural networks evolve at anticipating the next course of action.

Since cognitive biases are rooted in human nature and are unlikely to disappear, AI systems will need to consider them. An AI system that is perfect cannot be made. The methods currently in use can only be enhanced, optimized, and refined while providing every other part of the system a human-like quality. The more you are aware of cognitive bias, the more effectively you can use ML and AI.
