{"id":9694,"date":"2022-03-04T22:54:41","date_gmt":"2022-03-04T22:54:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=9694"},"modified":"2022-03-04T22:54:41","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T22:54:41","slug":"parking-meter-rates-to-increase-in-downtown-indy-and-in-broad-ripple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=9694","title":{"rendered":"Parking meter rates to increase in downtown Indy and in Broad Ripple"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>INDIANAPOLIS \u2014 Qasim Farid lives downtown and often parks at a meter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say three times a week I do feed the meter,\u201d Qasim said, exiting his truck at noon on Mass Ave downtown.<\/p>\n<p>When ParkIndy raises the hourly fee at parking meters throughout downtown and in Broad Ripple on April 1 from $1.50 an hour to $1.75, Farid estimates the increase will cost him about $100 per year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t surprise me. Things keep going up every year,\u201d he said. \u201cI wish it wasn\u2019t happening and I wish they would lower their prices as well but there should be a certain amount of rates for downtown residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/indiana-news\/indiana-could-restrict-where-adult-stores-are-located\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tIndiana could restrict where adult stores are located\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>The City\u2019s parking partner is raising its rates, based on inflation, at some meters for the first time in the first ten years of its contract.<\/p>\n<p>The increase will affect about 45% of the 4211 meters covered by the privatization partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout downtown, ParkIndy has installed the next generation of digital parking meters which users can access with an app, credit card or coins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a concern with the state of the parking meters and it took a lot to get those to work and figure out how they worked,\u201d said Gina Huff whose customers at Global Gifts sometimes park for hours along Mass Ave. \u201cI think just because everything is going up and with the understanding, I would assume, with having it updated to a digital system that people might just take it in stride that that\u2019s inflation and that\u2019s how things are going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to revenue statistics provided by ParkIndy, the City and its partner realized $96,013,812 in parking meter and citation revenue from 2011-2021 with the City receiving $35,768,747, a roughly 37% share of the total revenues.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics provided by the Department of Public Works show a more modest total for the City.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/indiana-news\/indiana-public-health-emergency-expires-as-bill-limiting-vaccine-mandates-is-signed-into-law\/?ipid=promo-link-block2\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tIndiana public health emergency expires as bill limiting vaccine mandates is signed into law\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to ParkIndy, the contractor and the City hit a high point in revenue in 2019, the last full year before the COVID-19 outbreak, with total revenues topping out at $11,116,156 and the City receiving $4,474,589.<\/p>\n<p>The next year, after the pandemic and the accompanying recession arrived in mid-March, overall revenues slumped to $6,961,335 with the City\u2019s share coming in at $2,415,426.<\/p>\n<p>Last year those numbers rebounded to $8,811,662 and $3,259,693 respectively, the lowest revenue figures since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>This year the City is projecting to receive $5 million in parking revenues and expecting the April rate increase to add another $275,000 to that figure.<\/p>\n<p>ParkIndy bears the financial responsibility of building, maintaining and staffing the network during the next 40 years of the contract\u2019s duration, which was renewed by the Hogsett administration in 2020 in a deal it inherited from Mayor Greg Ballard.<\/p>\n<p>On Mass Ave, where parking is sometimes at a premium and drivers coped with closed streets and outdoor restaurant seating competing for parking spaces, merchants are concerned paying an extra quarter an hour to park may hurt their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThat\u2019s not gonna help bring people downtown,\u201d said Jennifer McDaniel at Artisans. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to get people to come back downtown and shop and be able to shop local and enjoy downtown and everything it has to offer and if you gotta fight for a spot and pay a high price, you might think about going somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-content-cta-group\">\n<div class=\"modal modal--suggest-a-correction article-content-cta-group__cta\" data-component=\"modal\">\n<div class=\"modal__dialog\">\n<div class=\"modal__dialog-content\">\n\t\t\t<button class=\"modal__close-button\" aria-label=\"Close Modal Content\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"icon\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<title>Close Modal<\/title><\/p>\n<p><\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t<\/button><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"modal__dialog-title\">Suggest a Correction<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<p>\t<button data-modal-trigger=\"\">Suggest a Correction<\/button>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/fox59.com\/indiana-news\/parking-meter-rates-to-increase-downtown-and-in-broad-ripple\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>INDIANAPOLIS \u2014 Qasim Farid lives downtown and often parks at a meter. \u201cI would say three times a week I do feed the meter,\u201d Qasim said, exiting his truck at noon on Mass Ave downtown.
