The initial fall in stocks and rise in energy prices after Russia\u2019s invasion has moderated, but the world remains on edge as the broader geopolitical implications of the war take shape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Multinationals have halted operations in Ukraine and moved employees to safety<\/strong>, with Russia\u2019s assault <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/24\/business\/multinationals-halt-operations-in-ukraine-and-move-employees-to-safety.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sending shudders through boardrooms<\/a> around the world. Many corporate contingency plans did not anticipate the scale or swiftness of the invasion. Now executives in <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/be468d75-a085-462d-99c8-359abe8a4ae6\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a range of industries<\/a> are coming to grips with the impact that fighting will have on their facilities in Ukraine, as well as the ripple effects that sanctions and <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/24\/russian-invasion-of-ukraine-to-further-strain-us-chip-supply.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shortages of key resources<\/a> will have. And when I say everybody, everybody in our sector, but everybody pretty much in every sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Governments hit Russia with another round of sanctions<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/24\/us\/politics\/biden-sanctions-russia-ukraine.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">which President Biden said<\/a> would turn Vladimir Putin into an international \u201cpariah.\u201d Russia\u2019s two biggest lenders, Sberbank and <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russias-lender-vtb-says-western-sanctions-will-hit-card-usage-outside-russia-2022-02-24\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VTB<\/a>, were cut off from much of the international financial system, and Russian billionaires close to Putin were hit by more sanctions. Britain <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/uk-banning-all-russian-flights-from-airspace-over-ukraine-conflict-2022-2\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">banned all flights from Aeroflot<\/a> from its airspace; Russia retaliated with a similar prohibition today. And the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/24\/business\/us-announces-sweeping-restrictions-on-technological-exports-to-russia.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/25\/world\/europe\/eu-russian-sanctions.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">E.U.<\/a> barred the export of key technologies to Russia. European officials said yet another package of potential punishments is \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/eucopresident\/status\/1497147202027802624?s=20&amp;t=i7VTqzHhgKQiim7imSMVFg\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">under urgent preparation<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">But the latest sanctions avoided two key areas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"css-1le37cb ez3869y0\">\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-bwdy7f evys1bk0\">Both the E.U. and the U.S. pointedly <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/25\/business\/economy\/russia-europe-sanctions-gas-oil.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">refused to take aim<\/a> at Russia\u2019s biggest export, energy. As we\u2019ve noted before, Russia is one of the single biggest providers of natural gas to Europe, and hitting that could cause as much pain for the E.U. as it would Moscow.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-bwdy7f evys1bk0\">Western officials also disagreed about <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/24\/business\/russia-swift-financial-system.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">barring Russian banks from SWIFT<\/a>, the payments system that undergirds international finance. (<a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/69f72de5-d727-496d-9f9d-316db7bdaf03\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britain<\/a> is for it, while <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/fd5e7285-728e-4802-9bbf-a4b9a0622533\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Germany<\/a> is against.) Taking that step could complicate Europe\u2019s ability to buy energy from Russia, and weaken the dollar\u2019s role as the global reserve currency if it pushed Russia to develop an alternative system with allies like China (more on that below).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/adamtooze.substack.com\/p\/chartbook-86-about-those-sanctions\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Critics say<\/a> these omissions mean that the new sanctions \u201cdo everything but block the most important transactions that might actually impose severe costs both on Russia and America\u2019s major European allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">The geopolitical consequences of the Russian invasion are widening:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"css-1le37cb ez3869y0\">\n<li class=\"css-o74qhc eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-bwdy7f evys1bk0\">China, which <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/25\/us\/politics\/us-china-russia-ukraine.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">rebuffed U.S. efforts<\/a> to help avert the invasion, has refrained from publicly criticizing Putin, including after a call between Xi Jinping and Putin today. Experts worry that Beijing is ready to help <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/55d86391-2d05-4eb4-869c-83a7878b8942\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">soften the blow<\/a> of sanctions, and \u2014 more importantly \u2014 has <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/daily-comment\/what-is-china-learning-from-russias-invasion-of-ukraine\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">grown emboldened<\/a> by the lack of a united Western response to Putin\u2019s move. That was in part because of growing environmental concerns, but also low prices and write-downs on past investments. <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-21\/apollo-plans-to-shun-fossil-fuel-investments-in-next-buyout-fund\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apollo<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-02-22\/blackstone-swears-off-oil-patch-investing-as-private-equity-s-retreat-widens\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blackstone<\/a> are among the private equity firms reportedly turning away from fossil-fuel investments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">But as energy prices soar and the geopolitical landscape has shifted dramatically \u2014 and perhaps permanently \u2014 might dealmaking return to the oil patch?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u201cWhat looked terrible just six months ago now looks good,<\/strong>\u201d said Henning Gloystein, the director of energy, climate and resources at the Eurasia Group, in reference to the investing landscape. (He also acknowledged the terrible human hardships that come from war in Ukraine.) A patriotic framing of <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/06\/world\/europe\/us-seeks-to-reduce-ukraines-reliance-on-russia-for-natural-gas.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fracking as a weapon<\/a> to hurt Russia after it annexed Crimea in 2014 helped spur U.S. more natural gas production and exports to more countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThe environmental groups will still decry it, but the geopolitical background now looks much more favorable for midterm investments in this space, and to make money out of it,\u201d Gloystein said. Still, investors and drillers will look for assurances from the administration that it will ease some of its environmentally inspired <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/20\/climate\/carbon-biden-drilling-climate.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">regulatory scrutiny<\/a> of oil and gas permits, an industry lobbyist said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">But the long-term shift toward clean energy is likely here to stay<\/strong>,<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>with war in Ukraine the latest reminder of the strategic benefits of a robust clean energy infrastructure, Gloystein said.
