By doing so, employees can think beyond their day-to-day role to grow as professionals and individuals, while also creating meaningful value for the company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since mid-2021, the <strong>US<\/strong> workforce has been experiencing what many are calling<br \/>\nthe \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/09\/who-is-driving-the-great-resignation\" class=\"link-external\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Great<br \/>\nResignation<\/strong><\/a>\u201d \u2014<br \/>\nwith people re-evaluating what it is they want out of their life and career,<br \/>\nleaving their current roles for ones that better fit their needs, or people<br \/>\nopting out of the workforce entirely. This trend has put power firmly in the<br \/>\nhands of workers and reminded everyone that the most important stakeholder in<br \/>\nthe <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainablebrands.com\/read\/finance-investment\/trending-welcome-to-the-age-of-stakeholder-capitalism\" rel=\"noopener\">stakeholder<br \/>\ncapitalism<\/a><br \/>\nmodel is the employee.<\/p>\n<p>In this war for talent, it has become increasingly important to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainablebrands.com\/browse\/subjects\/employee-engagement\" rel=\"noopener\">keep employees<br \/>\nengaged<\/a>. A recent<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unily.com\/insights\/guides\/future-of-the-sustainable-workplace-in-the-age-of-covid-19-and-climate-change\" class=\"link-external\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Unily<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nstudy found that 65 percent of workers are more likely to work for more<br \/>\nsustainable employers \u2014 not just because of values, but because they believe<br \/>\nthat a sustainable employer will care about them more, offer more impactful<br \/>\nwork, and provide satisfaction and engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, recent workplace trends are telling us that the concept of purpose<br \/>\nneeds to translate from words to action. Fostering purpose among employees first<br \/>\ndrives innovation and encourages new ways of thinking from all corners of the<br \/>\nbusiness. With I-Prize, Kohler invites associates to form teams and develop<br \/>\nproducts, technologies and business models that address a social need, and<br \/>\ncompete for incubation funding to bring these ideas to life. Since the first<br \/>\nI-Prize competition in 2018, associates have developed over 80 ideas that<br \/>\naddress issues such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainablebrands.com\/read\/collaboration-cocreation\/water-may-be-life-but-it-is-never-a-given-learnings-from-the-navajo-nation\" rel=\"noopener\">safe water and<br \/>\nsanitation<\/a>,<br \/>\nwater conservation and most recently, greenhouse gas emissions. Several ideas<br \/>\nhave already been transitioned to commercialization and others are in the<br \/>\npipeline.<\/p>\n<p>However, beyond the business aspect is the impact this type of program has on<br \/>\nemployees. At the crux of I-Prize is the concept that innovation and new ideas<br \/>\ncan come from anywhere. Participants represent all corners of the business, from<br \/>\nengineers to confidential assistants, from interns to tenured associates, who<br \/>\nare located around the globe \u2014 from <strong>Kohler, WI<\/strong> to <strong>Jhagadia, India<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAssociates share their own unique skills and perspectives to solve the challenge<br \/>\nat hand, making their work and role more meaningful.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/eddy-cms\/editorial\/2022\/02-Feb\/kohler-associates.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"img-fluid img-thumbnail\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>I-Prize-winning associates Delia Mixon and Guarav Verma | Images credit: Kohler<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I-Prize helped <strong>Gaurav Verma<\/strong> \u2014 an India-based design engineer whose<br \/>\nwater-regulating product idea received funding in the 2020 <strong>Clean and<br \/>\nHygiene<\/strong>-themed I-Prize competition \u2014 feel a sense of belonging at Kohler,<br \/>\nespecially as a newcomer to the company. By participating in the competition,<br \/>\nGaurav was able to exercise key skills such as project management that tapped<br \/>\ninto his natural leadership ability, which inspired seasoned New Product<br \/>\nDevelopment teams at the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe collaborative culture and encouraging environment made me feel that all<br \/>\ndoors were open to me at Kohler,\u201d Gaurav says. \u201cCollaborating with head<br \/>\ndirectors and engineers on a project intended to contribute to society and give<br \/>\nback to the community were major motivators. What we are doing now is affecting<br \/>\ngenerations and this project remains close to my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This sentiment is shared by <strong>Atlanta<\/strong>-based confidential assistant <strong>Delia<br \/>\nMixon<\/strong>, a 12-year associate at Kohler who thrives in a collaborative<br \/>\nenvironment. Delia used her natural talent for creating connections to recruit a<br \/>\nwell-equipped team with a diversity of skills to develop a robust I-Prize pitch.<br \/>\nDelia was inspired by seeing her teammates, ranging from an intern to an<br \/>\nengineer, so invested in tackling climate issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be able to bring my strengths and lead something where I managed individuals<br \/>\nwith titles as high as director allowed me to develop and showcase my ability to<br \/>\nrun a project,\u201d Delia says. \u201cNot only did participating in I-Prize gave me the<br \/>\nopportunity to grow personally and professionally, but my team and I have given<br \/>\nthe company something to embrace and think about that could really make a<br \/>\ndifference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is important that companies create opportunities that encourage employees to<br \/>\nbreak down the internal and social borders that try to dictate who they are and<br \/>\nwhat they can achieve. By doing so, employees can unlock their potential and<br \/>\nthink beyond their day-to-day role to grow as professionals and individuals,<br \/>\nwhile also creating meaningful value for the company.
