While music really hasn\u2019t had its moment in the sun, as has the art market and the PFP mania of 2021\u20132022, collectible on-chain music feels inevitable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Collecting music is not new. It\u2019s had many iterations, from vinyl to cassettes to CDs to mp3s (remember that thing called Napster?) to $0.99 tracks on iTunes.<\/p>\n<p>My dad collects blues vinyl yet doesn\u2019t have a record player anymore. He streams music on Spotify, so why buy the vinyl? Why did so many opt to pay $0.99 for songs or $10 to $15 for albums on a centralized digital music marketplace like iTunes when, in reality, getting music for free was pretty accessible?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People collect music for a variety of reasons, including nostalgia, supporting artists financially, social signaling to their friends and followers, and showcasing their personality through their taste in music.<\/p>\n<p>Enter on-chain music: the next major platform in a rich history of formats through which we\u2019ve collected and consumed music.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Most people think crypto is dead.<\/p>\n<p>Most crypto people think nfts are dead.<\/p>\n<p>Most nft people think music nfts are stupid.<\/p>\n<p>But I see the most inspiring small corner of the internet that no-one has noticed yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 musicben.eth &#x1f3a7; (@musicben_eth) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/musicben_eth\/status\/1683846758659395587?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">July 25, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Does this mean your favorite streaming service is going away? Most likely not \u2014 certainly not anytime soon \u2014 but putting music on-chain can open up a whole range of new opportunities for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/soundxyz_\/status\/1679113365258477569?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">musicians<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/soundxyz_\/status\/1679113367556898817?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">collectors<\/a> alike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a recent Twitter thread, the online music market Sound <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/soundxyz_\/status\/1679113350829965312\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stated<\/a> that its hypothesis is that \u201cthe true value of music can be unlocked if we give fans the power to support artists directly.\u201d Since its launch in 2022, it claims to have made over $5 million for artists.<\/p>\n<p>The streaming era has been convenient for consumers, but not so much for artists, unless you\u2019re in the very top tier of elites. $0.003 per stream is hardly going to put food on the table. Going direct to your fan base with collectible music paves the way for a new era to usher in. Having initially stumbled into early stardom on her home country\u2019s <em>The X Factor<\/em>, she was on the traditional path but has opted to pave her own way with independence, and her fans love her for it.<\/p>\n<p>Zironi understands how to cultivate her fanbase. We know crypto markets work in cycles, so will we see the return of iconic art to accompany music and give it a memorable visual aspect, like the days of iconic album covers such as Nirvana\u2019s <em>Nevermind<\/em>, Michael Jackson\u2019s <em>Dangerous<\/em> and Red Hot Chili Peppers\u2019 <em>Blood Sugar Sex Magik<\/em>?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since streaming became the societal norm, the emphasis is way less on a traditional album and its associated cover art. But with the collaborative nature of NFTs and their composability, we could see a shift in interest move back to valuing the visual aspect to accompany music.<\/p>\n<p>We saw a mash-up from two iconic figures in their respective fields in late 2021 via Snoop Dogg and Coldie\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/magazine\/coldie-snoop-dogg-piece-vitalik-buterin-john-mcafee\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cDecentral Eyes Dogg.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-s-hot-in-nft-art-markets\"><strong>What\u2019s hot in NFT art markets?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Big sales are coming from Pak, Fidenzas and Joe Pease.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We also recently saw 10 new Squiggles minted (#9872\u2013#9881) and a successful drop by 99-year-old Vera Moln\u00e1r, a pioneer of generative art who collaborated with Martin Grasser, a generative artist himself. They\u2019ve also had multiple sales over $500,000.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-staying-motivated-as-long-term-artists\"><strong>Staying motivated as long-term artists<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With a pedigree in one-of-one art, Hackatao loves innovation, and in 2022, they launched <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/queenskings.hackatao.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Queens+Kings<\/em><\/a>,<em> <\/em>which introduced tradable traits to put a different spin on PFP collections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love experimentation and innovation. We approach new projects with the spirit of experimenting with new mechanisms and trying to bring something innovative to the space,\u201d Hackatao says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it was for Queens+Kings and its traits trading system. It makes us smile, especially by those who acquired our works for a few dollars between 2018 and 2019 and who still keep them close in their collection.
