Someone tried to sell a JPEG for BTC months before Bitcoin Pizza Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-v-6da673f8=\"\">\n<p>Crypto Twitter was briefly set ablaze on May 14 with a suggestion that the world\u2019s first real-world purchase made by Bitcoin may have been for a JPEG, not pizza.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet from independent developer Udi Wertheimer, the Bitcoin advocate shared a screenshot showing what could have been the first-ever purchase using Bitcoin \u2014 even predating the infamous Bitcoin Pizza.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This Twitter Space was FIRE<\/p>\n<p>We discovered that:<\/p>\n<p>the first purchase EVER with bitcoin was buying a JPEG for 500 BTC in Feb 2010<\/p>\n<p>it pre-dates the the famous 10,000 BTC pizza<\/p>\n<p>satoshi himself helped facilitate the JPEG sale<\/p>\n<p>laser-eye cult in absolute SHAMBLES <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b6ESOkbf0i\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/b6ESOkbf0i<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Udi Wertheimer &#x200d;&#x2642;&#xfe0f; (@udiWertheimer) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/udiWertheimer\/status\/1657822781625475080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">May 14, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The posted screenshot is dated Jan. 24, 2010, a full four months before Bitcoin Pizza Day \u2014 when Bitcoin developer \u200b\u200bLaszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 Bitcoin for two pizzas in what is\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-pizza-day-rewind-a-homage-to-weird-and-wonderful-btc-purchases\" rel=\"noopener\">widely considered to be<\/a> the first real-world purchase made using Bitcoin. <\/p>\n<p>The screenshot shows a user called Sabunir <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bitcointalk.org\/index.php?topic=25.msg118#msg118\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">attempting<\/a> to sell a picture for 500 Bitcoin \u2014 worth roughly $1 at the time \u2014 on theBitcoin forum Bitcointalk.<\/p>\n<p>It even highlighted that pseudonymous Bitcoin <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/who-is-satoshi-nakamoto-the-creator-of-bitcoin\" rel=\"noopener\">founder Satoshi Nakamoto<\/a> was trying to get <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bitcointalk.org\/index.php?topic=25.msg159#msg159\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">involved<\/a> in helping the sale go through. <\/p>\n<p>Doubt has been cast on the claim however, with a tweet from professional poker player turned crypto investor Mike McDonald pointing to a screenshot that suggests the Bitcoin transaction could have been a donation, meaning the JPEG was never actually &#8220;sold.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#8217;m not sure if it has been dispelled yet but it seems like Sabunir&#8217;s 500 btc was a donation rather than sale.<\/p>\n<p>He posted his address for his NFT Jan 24, then posted it again in the btc logo thread on Feb 24. Feb 24 500 btc was sent, Feb 25 he thanks 2 people for donations 1\/2 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6Rk9Ont9KU\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/6Rk9Ont9KU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mike McDonald (@MikeMcDonald89) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MikeMcDonald89\/status\/1657823895615946752?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">May 14, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a subsequent tweet, Wertheimer conceded his original tweet may have been inaccurate, saying that although Sabunir did list a JPEG for sale at the price of 500 BTC and that they received the same amount in their address a month later, \u201cit\u2019s possible that the 500 BTC were sent as a donation for a different interaction\u201d and that the sale of the JPEG was never actually conducted. <\/p>\n<p>Without in-person confirmation from Sabunir, it remains unclear what the 500 BTC were transferred for, said Wertheimer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-ordinals-hit-binance-nft-marketplace-in-latest-update\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Bitcoin ordinals hit Binance NFT Marketplace in latest update<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The rumor comes in the wake of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/explained\/what-are-bitcoin-ordinals\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin Ordinals phenomenon<\/a>, which has at the time of publication seen more than 6.1 million images, videos and even tokens \u2014 by way of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/brc-20-tokens-surpass-1b-market-cap-as-wallet-providers-prepare-integration\" rel=\"noopener\">BRC-20 token standard<\/a> \u2014 minted on the Bitcoin blockchain. <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-05\/9f1abddf-fc5b-44c1-9714-189a4ed3c890.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Total number of Ordinals inscriptions on Bitcoin.
