{"id":5038,"date":"2022-01-16T21:37:38","date_gmt":"2022-01-16T21:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=5038"},"modified":"2022-01-16T21:37:38","modified_gmt":"2022-01-16T21:37:38","slug":"this-laptop-from-1989-can-mine-bitcoin-but-it-definitely-wont-make-you-rich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=5038","title":{"rendered":"This laptop from 1989 can mine Bitcoin, but it definitely won&#8217;t make you rich"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>A developer has managed to turn a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/mobile-computing\/laptops\/best-laptops-1304361\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>laptop<\/u><\/a> from 1989 into a cryptocurrency <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/best\/mining-rigs\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>mining machine<\/u><\/a>, but it won\u2019t be making anyone rich any time soon.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/computing\/pc\/10-of-the-best-desktop-pcs-of-2015-1304391\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>computer<\/u><\/a> in question is the once cutting-edge Toshiba T3200SX, which is powered by a 16MHz Intel 386SX <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/best-processors\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>processor<\/u><\/a> and runs on MS-DOS. When it first hit the market, the T3200SX was available at the low, low price of $6,299 (or $13,896 in today\u2019s money).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" \/>\n<p>The architect of the mining project, Dmitrii Eliuseev, has published a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.devgenius.io\/bitcoin-mining-using-the-ms-dos-laptop-7720b884c85c\" data-url=\"https:\/\/blog.devgenius.io\/bitcoin-mining-using-the-ms-dos-laptop-7720b884c85c\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>blog post<\/u><\/a> setting out his process, which included programming his own <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/best\/mining-software\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>mining software<\/u><\/a> for MS-DOS (now <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dmitryelj\/SHA256-Benchmark\/releases\" data-url=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dmitryelj\/SHA256-Benchmark\/releases\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>available on GitHub<\/u><\/a>) and calculating potential earnings over time.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"retro-crypto-mining-rig\">Retro crypto mining rig<\/h2>\n<p>Transforming unlikely hardware into Bitcoin mining machines has become something of a tradition in recent years; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/best-phone\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>smartphones<\/u><\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/best-raspberry-pi-distro\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Raspberry Pis<\/u><\/a> and even Teslas have been used to mine cryptocurrency. Thanks to Eliuseev, the Toshiba T3200SX now joins this prestigious list.<\/p>\n<p>However, while the T3200SX is indeed capable of mining Bitcoin, it achieves a performance of just 15 hashes per second, which Eliuseev estimates would yield one dollar\u2019s worth of Bitcoin every 584 million years. And Bitcoin mining farms are packed out with many hundreds of these ASICs.<\/p>\n<p>As noted by our sister site Tom\u2019s Hardware, there\u2019s more bad news for anyone hoping to turn a profit using the T3200SX.
