{"id":49056,"date":"2023-04-19T11:38:41","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T11:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=49056"},"modified":"2023-04-19T11:38:41","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T11:38:41","slug":"metamask-denies-claims-of-wallet-exploit-in-massive-10m-hack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=49056","title":{"rendered":"MetaMask denies claims of wallet exploit in \u2018massive\u2019 $10M hack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.cointelegraph.com\/images\/840_aHR0cHM6Ly9zMy5jb2ludGVsZWdyYXBoLmNvbS91cGxvYWRzLzIwMjMtMDQvMDRhNzg4MDktZmE0Yi00NzA2LWFmYTEtMGMwYzliNDNiYTUzLmpwZw==.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div data-v-2ab31f4e=\"\">\n<p>Cryptocurrency wallet provider MetaMask has denied claims that an exploit of its wallet is the cause of a \u201cmassive wallet draining operation\u201d that has claimed over 5,000 Ether (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/ethereum-price\" rel=\"noopener\">ETH<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>On April 18, MetaMask tweeted in response to a series of tweets posted on April 17 by Taylor Monahan, the founder of Ethereum wallet manager MyCrypto, who explained an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/exploit-targets-crypto-veterans-drains-over-10m-across-11-blockchains\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/exploit-targets-crypto-veterans-drains-over-10m-across-11-blockchains\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">unidentified wallet-draining exploit<\/a> has stolen over $10.5 million in crypto and nonfungible tokens (NFTs) since December 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent reporting on [Monahan\u2019s] thread has incorrectly claimed that a massive wallet-draining operation is a result of a MetaMask exploit,\u201d MetaMask said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Recent reporting on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tayvano_?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">@tayvano_<\/a>\u2019s thread has incorrectly claimed that a massive wallet draining operation is a result of a MetaMask exploit. <\/p>\n<p>This is incorrect. This is not a MetaMask-specific exploit. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MiJ3QgslMy\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/MiJ3QgslMy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MetaMask  (@MetaMask) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MetaMask\/status\/1648422118097584128?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">April 18, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis is incorrect. This is not a MetaMask-specific exploit,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>The wallet provider said the 5,000 ETH was stolen \u201cfrom various addresses across 11 blockchains,\u201d reaffirming the claim that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/hundred-finance-loses-7-million-in-optimism-hack\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/hundred-finance-loses-7-million-in-optimism-hack\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">funds were hacked<\/a> from MetaMask \u201cis incorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Cointelegraph, Wallet Guard co-founder Ohm Shah said the MetaMask team has been \u201cresearching tirelessly,\u201d and there is \u201cno solid answer to how this has happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are tons of independent security researchers also investigating this,\u201d Shah said.<\/p>\n<p>He speculated it was possible to assume that there had been \u201csome sort of private key or seed phrase leak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its latest series of tweets, MetaMask confirmed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/metamask-third-party-provider-was-hacked-exposing-email-addresses\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/metamask-third-party-provider-was-hacked-exposing-email-addresses\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">its security team<\/a> was researching the source of the exploit and was \u201cworking with others across the Web3 wallet space\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related:\u00a0<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/safemoon-hacker-agrees-to-return-80-of-stolen-funds-says-development-team\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/safemoon-hacker-agrees-to-return-80-of-stolen-funds-says-development-team\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SafeMoon hacker agrees to return 80% of stolen funds, says development team<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In her thread on the exploit, Monahan stated that \u201cno one knows how\u201d this massive attack was conducted, but her \u201cbest guess\u201d was that a significant amount of old data was obtained and used to extract the funds.<\/p>\n<p>She also originally claimed the attacker was draining long-time MetaMask users and employees by using MetaMask.<\/p>\n<p>Monahan later stated the exploit is not MetaMask-specific and \u201cusers of all wallets, even those created on a hardware wallet,\u201d have been impacted by the exploit.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Magazine:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/magazine\/ethics-101-crypto-projects-negotiate-hackers\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Should crypto projects ever negotiate with hackers?
