(KOIN) \u2014 Portland city employees in 6 labor unions began voting Monday whether to authorize a strike after their contract negotiations reached an impasse in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandoregon.gov\/bhr\/80948\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.portlandoregon.gov\/bhr\/80948\">District Council of Trade Unions<\/a><\/strong> leaders said elected officials need to take responsibility for budgeting better for their work force. <\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.koin.com\/local\/multnomah-county\/portland-city-workers-rally-ahead-of-vote-to-authorize-strike\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\u2018Negotiations at impasse\u2019: Portland city workers may strike\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>AFSCME President Rob Martineau told KOIN 6 News they \u201call provide critical services and they should not expect their workers to do that for less than the value of their labor. It would also have ripple effects on all aspects of city life if more than 1100 city workers are out on the picket line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of those things are going to be a direct impact to folks in the city of Portland,\u201d Martineau said.<\/p>\n<p>The voting on whether to strike will go on all week. Because of the pandemic, some voting is in person, some is online.
