{"id":43350,"date":"2023-02-05T13:31:51","date_gmt":"2023-02-05T13:31:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=43350"},"modified":"2023-02-05T13:31:51","modified_gmt":"2023-02-05T13:31:51","slug":"starkware-commits-to-open-source-its-magic-wand-starknet-prover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=43350","title":{"rendered":"Starkware commits to open source its \u2018magic wand\u2019 Starknet Prover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-v-5a4050f8=\"\">\n<p>Ethereum <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/blockchain-for-beginners\/a-beginners-guide-on-blockchain-layer-2-scaling-solutions\" rel=\"noopener\">layer 2 scaling solution<\/a> StarkWare announced plans to open source its proprietary Starknet Prover under the Apache 2.0 license, which has processed 327 million transactions and minted 95 million <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/nonfungible-tokens-for-beginners\/what-are-nfts-and-why-are-they-revolutionizing-the-art-world\" rel=\"noopener\">nonfungible tokens (NFTs)<\/a> to date.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The prover is the crucial engine Starkware uses to roll up hundreds of thousands of transactions and compress them into a tiny cryptographic proof written on the Ethereum blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think of the Prover as the magic wand of Stark technology. It wondrously generates the proofs that allow unimaginable scaling,\u201d said Eli Ben-Sasson, president and co-founder of Starkware.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-02\/a0be4572-ae44-4577-9c19-1a7bdfb35185.jpg\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Eli Ben-Sasson presenting at the Starkware sessions 2023. Source: Cointelegraph<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Starkware has faced criticism from the crypto community and competing solutions such as ZK Sync and Polygon for holding onto the IP behind its tech, which contradicts blockchain\u2019s open source and interoperable ethics. <\/p>\n<p>Making the prover open source under the Apache 2.0 license will enable any other project or network \u2014 or even games or database developers \u2014 to make use of the technology, edit the code and customize it. The tech was released in 2020 and is already being used by ImmutableX, Sorare and dYdX.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-02\/81e4b35e-20bd-4484-a21d-620e53102ec4.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>A sneak peek of the\u00a0Starkware sessions 2023. Source: Cointelegraph<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Avihu Levy, Starkware\u2019s head of product, was reluctant to commit to a time frame for open-sourcing the prover but said it would occur after the token launch and decentralization of Starknet itself. He agreed, however, that it would be possible this year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to move forward with a decentralized, permissionless network and that means that you need to have this critical component out there,\u201d he revealed speaking to Cointelegraph.<\/p>\n<p>Levy said the decision to open source the prover showed Starkware was increasingly confident about its technology and said it would also enable projects to be more confident about using it as a crucial part of their protocols. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn StarkEx, it\u2019s sometimes considered vendor lock-up or lock-in.
