But a new nuclear-powered data center is set to launch in Pennsylvania later this year, and it could shift at least some of that pollution-filled energy consumption to a cleaner version.<\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0\">Cumulus Data has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cumulusinfra.com\/about-us\/news\/cumulus-data-completes-key-milestones-in-construction-of-its-flagship-zero-carbon-susquehanna-data-center-campus\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/cumulusinfra.com\/about-us\/news\/cumulus-data-completes-key-milestones-in-construction-of-its-flagship-zero-carbon-susquehanna-data-center-campus\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"wrapped the first phase\" class=\"body-link css-3wjtm9 et3p2gv0\" rel=\"noopener\">wrapped the first phase<\/a> of its 475-megawatt, zero-carbon Susquehanna data center campus in northeast Pennsylvania. The project starts with a 48-megawatt, 300,000-square-foot data center to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeraWulfInc\/status\/1617984012622135296\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeraWulfInc\/status\/1617984012622135296\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"house TeraWulf\" class=\"body-link css-3wjtm9 et3p2gv0\" rel=\"noopener\">house TeraWulf<\/a>, a bitcoin mining company. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0\">The 1,200-acre campus aims to provide zero-carbon energy from Talen Energy\u2019s Susquehanna nuclear power generation facility. The Cumulus data centers will connect directly to the facility without legacy electric transmission and distribution utilities. This process is a power-sucking endeavor that has led to massive data centers across the world dedicated just to bitcoin mining. These data centers crave energy. Ethereum, the world\u2019s second largest crypto blockchain, has already started improving its carbon emission efforts, but bitcoin accounts for roughly 70 percent of all crypto electricity usage and hasn\u2019t made major gains in cleaning up its process. <\/p>\n<p data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0\">Electricity usage from global crypto mining quadrupled from 2018 to 2022, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/ostp\/news-updates\/2022\/09\/08\/fact-sheet-climate-and-energy-implications-of-crypto-assets-in-the-united-states\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/ostp\/news-updates\/2022\/09\/08\/fact-sheet-climate-and-energy-implications-of-crypto-assets-in-the-united-states\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"according\" class=\"body-link css-3wjtm9 et3p2gv0\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the U.S. government. By mid-2022, crypto assets were using upward of 240 billion kilowatt hours per year\u2014more than the annual electricity of countries such as Argentina or Australia.
