Essex County OPP are warning the public to be vigilant about scammers after a Tecumseh resident was bilked out of $70,000 in a cryptocurrency investment scheme.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

According to a release from OPP on Monday, the victim became involved in an online cryptocurrency brokerage and was convinced to invest funds.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cAt this time, the victim is not able to retrieve their money from the investments,\u201d OPP said.<\/p>\n

Essex County OPP\u2019s crime unit has taken up the investigation due to the large amount of money that is missing \u2014 more than $70,000.<\/p>\n

While cryptocurrency is a relatively new angle for scammers, OPP reminds citizens of some tried and true advice to avoid being defrauded.<\/p>\n

Never give out personal information to unknown parties. Verify all contact information when communicating with someone. Keep a close eye on your bank account and credit cards. Take your own time and do some research when approached about a so-called opportunity.<\/p>\n

And don\u2019t automatically trust the name on a caller display: It could be false.<\/p>\n
