While Bitcoin (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-price\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a>) and altcoins have <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/these-4-altcoins-may-attract-buyers-with-bitcoin-stagnating\" rel=\"noopener\">remained stagnant to start 2023<\/a>, there are a few reasons why volatility could spike in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-01\/1b53826b-35f7-47e3-8ddd-a95a94e96313.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Market caps during the 2022 holiday period. Source: Arcane Research<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Winklevoss Letter to DCG stirs up bankruptcy FUD<\/h2>\n<p>On Jan. 2, Cameron Winklevoss, the co-founder of Gemini, penned an open letter to Digital Currency Group (DCG) founder, Barry Silbert <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/cameron-winklevoss-pens-open-letter-to-barry-silbert-about-gemini-s-blocked-funds\" rel=\"noopener\">demanding answers on the $900 million in locked customer funds<\/a>. Gemini launched the \u201cEarn\u201d program in coordination with Barry Silbert and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/crypto-lender-genesis-allegedly-owes-900m-to-gemini-s-clients-report\" rel=\"noopener\">$900 million in customer funds have been locked since Nov. 16<\/a> due to DCG liquidity issues. After the letter, crypto <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/su-zhu-gets-called-out-by-the-community-as-he-fires-off-accusations-against-dcg\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter began generating FUD toward DCG<\/a>, believing there to be liquidity issues akin to 3 Arrows Capital and FTX. <\/p>\n<p>The financial strain the large Gemini hole could place on DCG is significant because they may be forced to sell sizable GBTC and ETHE positions, along with other positions in trusts run by their sister company Grayscale. According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theweeklyupdate.substack.com\/p\/ahead-of-the-curve-january-3?utm_source=profile&amp;utm_medium=reader2\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Arcane Research<\/a>, another path for DCG to meet debt obligations would be to initiate a Reg M.<\/p>\n<p>Vetle Lunde, Senior Analyst at Arcane Research, noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA Reg M would cause a massive arbitrage strategy of selling crypto spot versus buying Grayscale Trust shares. If this scenario plays out, crypto markets could face further downside.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-01\/d64e015f-ffe2-4bff-aa2e-1cbae06b1bf2.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Grayscale trust holdings of circulating supply. Source: Arcane Research<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Fear is high and liquidity is low<\/h2>\n<p>The DCG and Gemini drama comes during a period in the market where sentiment is down. Despite evidence that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/still-bullish-40-of-survey-respondents-plan-to-buy-crypto-in-2023\" rel=\"noopener\">investors plan to participate in crypto<\/a> in 2023, the most market participants are not feeling bullish and are reluctant to engage with risk-assets. The index currently sits at 26 out of a 100-point scale which is the same as in December. <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-01\/be3acccb-94c4-48b9-ba67-422f1fa06d29.jpg\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Fear and greed index. Market activity continues to fall reaching volumes not witnessed before Binance introduced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/binance-u-s-makes-btc-trading-fee-free-as-competitors-feel-the-heat\" rel=\"noopener\">zero trading fees for BTC pairs<\/a> on June 24. The low spot trading volumes suggest that muted market participation will continue in the early part of this year. <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-01\/5ba956eb-0d05-40a5-af36-2476c4188266.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>BTC volume with and without Binance. Jan. 6:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Non Farm Payrolls and Unemployment data<\/li>\n<li>ISM Non-manufacturing PMI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sun. Jan. 8:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gemini settlement offer to DCG expires<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thurs. Jan. 12:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>US CPI Inflation Rate Report<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fri. Jan. 13:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>US banks start Q4 2022 earnings reports<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the numbers are below expectations or anything out of the ordinary occurs, the equities market may react by selling-off. <\/p>\n<p>Reduced spot volumes are coupled with BTC volatility reaching a 2.5-year low. According to Lunde, the low volatility period will not last too long. <\/p>\n<p>Lunde said,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese low volatility periods rarely last for long, and volatility compression periods have previously tended to be followed by sharp moves, even in stagnant markets.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2023-01\/4e5f671a-d0f6-49ce-b4c0-4904a4e6d250.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>BTC 7 and 30-day volatility. Source: Arcane Research<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some analysts believe that the Jan. 12 United State Consumer Price Index (CPI) will<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/us-will-see-new-inflation-spike-5-things-to-know-in-bitcoin-this-week\" rel=\"noopener\"> show a spike in inflation<\/a>.
