Such capability is not yet possible on the Ethereum mainnet, but would be enabled by a popular Ethereum proposal called \u201cAccount Abstraction,\u201d which would allow Ethereum user accounts to function like smart contracts and feature pre-scheduled execution functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Though crypto auto-payments would not necessarily have a dramatic impact on the banking and payments landscape, it\u2019s a further sign that Visa is planning on becoming an active player in crypto, a sector it sees as potentially critical to the long-term future of payments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cWe want to have an opportunity to actively contribute to technical developments happening in the crypto ecosystem,\u201d Catherine Gu, Visa\u2019s Head of CBDC and Protocols, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">. \u201cThe best way to do that is learning by doing\u2014actually getting deeper into Web3 infrastructures and blockchain protocols, areas I think are going to be really important for payments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Gu\u2019s group, first organized to look into the potential of digital currencies backed by world governments, is now actively investigating what other blockchain technologies are poised to reshape the world of payments\u2014and how soon their adoption could be implemented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">That day doesn\u2019t seem, in Gu\u2019s opinion, to be particularly close.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThis technology is very nascent right now, but there could be something there down the road,\u201d Gu said. \u201cA lot of research needs to be done around fundamental aspects important for payments, like security and scalability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">An enduring, elusive goal for blockchain networks like Ethereum has long been scalability: the ability to maintain network security while allowing for cheap and instant transactions on a mass scale. Many anticipated updates to the Ethereum network are focused on tackling this problem. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/109766\/the-ethereum-merge-is-here-what-next\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Proto-danksharding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, for example, is an early version of a system that could one day radically reduce the amount of data needed to be securely analyzed to process huge swathes of Ethereum transactions. It is expected to launch some time later next year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cFrom a payments standpoint, most [blockchain networks] are not yet scalable enough to process transactions at a really high speed in a secure and trusted way,\u201d Gu said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Until networks like Ethereum can extensively scale, it\u2019s unlikely they will be meaningfully integrated by major firms like Visa. But the payments company, which has been in regular communication with Ethereum\u2019s core developers, is optimistic that such technological horizons are within reach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">That optimism offers a marked departure from the grimness of current mainstream sentiment on crypto, dominated in the last month by the continually unfolding demise of crypto exchange FTX and its disgraced founder, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/117594\/ftx-sam-bankman-fried-extradited-us-today-reports\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cIt&#8217;s very important to figure out what&#8217;s the signal and what&#8217;s the noise,\u201d Gu said. \u201cWe&#8217;re taking a much longer-term perspective on this technology. It may have real utility, and that\u2019s why we\u2019re here: to invest more, to do research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In October, the firm <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/113144\/visa-paypal-western-union-among-fall-flurry-of-crypto-trademark-filings\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">filed trademark applications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> indicating it was mulling a crypto wallet and a metaverse product.
