The spokeswoman added that attendance was lower than usual that season, because of the pandemic, and that the opera reached many more people through other means, including television broadcasts seen by 2.2 million viewers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Arts Council has defended its decision. Claire Mera-Nelson, the agency\u2019s director of music, <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artscouncil.org.uk\/blog\/investing-future-music\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said in a blog post<\/a> that she had seen \u201calmost no growth in demand\u201d for large-scale opera over the past five years, and had decided to prioritize funding for the art form \u201cat different scales, reimagined in new ways\u201d such as staging productions in parking lots, or pubs. At the Coliseum last week, before a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan\u2019s \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eno.org\/whats-on\/the-yeomen-of-the-guard\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Yeomen of the Guard<\/a>,\u201d the atmosphere was relaxed and informal.
