But he did not get into it for the money. Not directly, anyway.<br \/>Konale, a Bangalore-based\u00a0chartered\u00a0accountant\u00a0(CA), had just started his own auditing firm with a partner and he identified a clear dearth of qualified accountants to advise investors\u00a0who are\u00a0part of India\u2019s burgeoning cryptocurrency market.<br \/>It was a new world, seemingly different from the work CAs have been\u00a0doing. But Konale firmly\u00a0believed\u00a0that \u201ca traditional practice will have a limited future.\u201d He dived into cryptocurrencies,\u00a0starting as an investor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fundamental accounting principles\u00a0are\u00a0the same for crypto currencies. But traditional CAs are not familiar with the ecosystem, so they run away,\u201d Konale said.<br \/>\u201cThat\u2019s why I started investing. I wanted to understand the ecosystem before getting into accounting it,\u201d he\u00a0added.<br \/>Konale is among a handful of Indian CAs who, over the past five years, have taken the plunge into\u00a0the crypto current market,\u00a0offering their services\u00a0to\u00a0investors. The clients of these firms are also mostly in the age group of 20 to 40 years from Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities.<br \/>\u201cThere was a considerable lack of knowledgeable advisors\u00a0before 2020,\u201d said 29-year-old Anoush Bhasin, founder of Delhi-based Quagmire Consulting, which\u00a0solely\u00a0focuses on crypto assignments.\u00a0But\u00a0the Supreme Court\u2019s\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/supreme-court-sets-aside-rbi-ban-on-cryptocurrency-transactions\/article61967124.ece\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/supreme-court-sets-aside-rbi-ban-on-cryptocurrency-transactions\/article61967124.ece&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667625727634000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3cbnrKoNMC1RoB6tEuZSqB\" rel=\"noopener\">ruling<\/a>\u00a0against the Reserve Bank of India\u2019s ban on crypto currencies in 2020 and the Covid\u00a0pandemic changed it all and\u00a0the industry\u00a0also\u00a0started\u00a0to look more creditable.<br \/>\u201cNow with the new tax rules, a number of CA firms are jumping in,\u201d added Bhasin who quit his job with one of the Big Four audit firms in\u00a02018 to pursue a \u201cmore thrilling\u201d\u00a0career.<br \/>\u201cHaving developed a keen interest in Bitcoin, I saw a huge vacuum in crypto-friendly regulatory and tax advice in India. I decided to help investors, traders, entrepreneurs to legitimately enter and exit the crypto market,\u201d Bhasin said.<br \/>Bhasin\u2019s clients are mostly high frequency traders, long-term investors,\u00a0high net-worth individuals, software developers and consultants.\u00a0And they are all\u00a0young with a considerable risk-taking appetite.<br \/>Abhinav Soomaney,\u00a028,\u00a0started his accounting career with crypto assignments with a firm in the United States.<br \/>\u201cI was lucky to get into this space when cryptocurrency taxes were just being discussed (globally). A colleague and I sat together and created a template for crypto taxation. We are using the same template today in India,\u201d Soomaney said. In 2020, he founded Cryptotax International, the Indian arm of which is working on a new software for the Indian market to help investors directly link their exchanges and get the tax calculation in just a few clicks.<br \/>\u201cRight now, Indian clients are not worried about tax. We get calls\u00a0from people enquiring about what we\u00a0charge\u00a0and\u00a0when can we get started,\u201d said Soomaney.\u00a0He\u00a0has over 300 clients, mostly international, who he has been assisting on and off. \u201cThere is a great demand because there are very few accountants doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also read: <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Web 3.0 is here and India can be a big player. But it needs a gameplan<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not a market for everyone<br \/>One reason the crypto space has fewer accountants auditing it is because of the inherent challenges in it\u2014lack of clarity on the regulatory framework within India, the government\u2019s cynical approach and the history of frauds associated with cryptocurrencies.<br \/>\u201cThere are a lot of fraudulent activities, and we have also helped clients recover funds, at least partially. Scams and frauds still persist because the market is unregulated,\u201d said Mitesh Nagori, 44, who has his own firm\u00a0in Mumbai, CA Mitesh and Associates.<br \/>\u201cIf you don\u2019t know the right approach, then there are chances that you might be dealing with people who are untrustworthy,\u201d\u00a0Nagori\u00a0said, adding\u00a0that\u00a0many crypto exchanges in India have gone bust because of the various challenges, but people are willing to take the risk because the returns can be \u201cvery rewarding.\u201d<br \/>Nagori, however, cautions his clients. \u201cIt is still a very volatile market. News in one part of the world can affect the value in a big way. It is not for everyone,\u201d he said.<br \/>Soomaney, whose firm has many US-based clients, said he is currently helping the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)\u00a0in\u00a0a case where an investor got scammed\u00a0of a significant amount. He also has a client in India who sent \u20ac5,000 to a UK-based company that asked him to pay 5 per cent of his investment to cash out. \u201cThe company then stopped responding,\u201d he said.<br \/>It\u2019s time for regulation<br \/>The CAs\u00a0who are\u00a0already in the crypto space say it is about time that the Indian government drafts a regulatory framework on cryptocurrency trading.<br \/>\u201cThe Indian government has been playing hot and cold with crypto regulations. Unless someone is passionate about this industry, it\u2019s tough to stomach the regulatory uncertainty,\u201d Bhasin said.<br \/>\u201cI think it\u2019s a matter of time that the Indian government drafts an overarching regulatory framework. We are very passionate about this space and are happy to weather the turbulence,\u201d he added.<br \/>Nagori said the decision to bring crypto transactions under the ambit of 30 per cent tax was a good start. \u201cBut a lot of clarity still needs to come in,\u201d he said.<br \/>Accountants such as Soomaney say that perhaps those who have gotten an early headway into the industry can help design a regulatory framework.<br \/>\u201cBringing in regulatory clarity is now going to be in the hands of accountants like us who will help the government frame the system. No country has guidelines currently, so we do what we feel is right,\u201d Soomaney said. \u201cBut, we as accountants have to figure out how to work this.\u201d<br \/>Konale has a slightly nuanced view. He admits that there is lack of regulatory clarity, but he insists that it is of no concern to him.<br \/>\u201cMy objective is determination of gain. What is the gain that has been incurred by these investors?
