Now that the Ethereum<\/a><\/span> merge is <\/span>complete<\/span><\/a>, Vitalik Buterin thinks other blockchains like <\/span>Dogecoin<\/a><\/span><\/span> and <\/span>Zcash<\/a><\/span><\/span> should follow suit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs proof of stake matures, I expect it to just increase in legitimacy more and more over time,\u201d Vitalik said over video chat at the Mainnet conference Friday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that Zcash moves over. I am also very hopeful that Dogecoin is going to evolve over to proof of stake at some point soon,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Ethereum executed its long-awaited <\/span>merge event<\/span><\/a>, moving its main network from the energy-intensive proof-of-work<\/span><\/a> (PoW) model to the more energy-efficient proof-of-stake<\/span><\/a> (PoS) model.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The high-stakes event went smoothly, said Buterin, despite every test network merge experiencing \u201csome kind of bug.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Zcash could join Dogecoin, Ethereum\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

At Mainnet, Buterin spoke with Messari CEO Ryan Selkis and the CEO of Electric Coin Company Zooko Wilcox-O\u2019Hearn (Electric Coin Company leads Zcash development).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou emailed me your plan for Ethereum, and I was like, \u2018holy shit. This is so exciting. And it\u2019ll never work,\u2019\u201d Wilcox-O\u2019Hearn said. \u201cAnd then you and the Ethereum [developers] proved me wrong. It totally worked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Zooko, who\u2019s most known for his connection to the PoW privacy coin Zcash, also thought the Ethereum merge would \u201cnever work.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But now, he\u2019s singing a different tune.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be proud of yourselves for the rest of your life,\u201d Zooko said, referring to Ethereum developers and Buterin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked if Zcash would execute its own merge-like event, Electric Coin Company\u2019s CEO said he was waiting to see how Ethereum fares since the upgrade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe’ve literally been waiting to see what we can learn from Ethereum,\u201d Zooko said. \u201cI guess what we\u2019ve learned is that it actually works.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Proof-of-stake season<\/span><\/h2>\n

But what does Buterin think of other blockchains besides Zcash and Doge making the leap to PoS?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor the other chains, we\u2019ll see,\u201d he said. \u201cSome of them might; I\u2019m sure at least some of them never will. There might even be some compromise middle ground where some chains end up moving to some kind of hybrid proof of stake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But for now, Buterin is simply relieved with the state of Ethereum, which he said is now in a much better position post-merge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA sky that has been cloudy for almost a decade finally cleared,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n
