{"id":28935,"date":"2022-09-13T20:51:09","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T20:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=28935"},"modified":"2022-09-13T20:51:09","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T20:51:09","slug":"merriam-webster-throws-shade-on-ethereum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=28935","title":{"rendered":"Merriam-Webster throws shade on Ethereum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Ethereum\u2019s native cryptocurrency ether (ETH) is an altcoin.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t shoot the messenger, this is coming from the US\u2019s oldest dictionary Merriam-Webster, who just listed a number of crypto-related terms in its latest lexicon update.<\/p>\n<p>In fairness, the official definition a little vague, being \u201cany of various cryptocurrencies that are regarded as alternatives to established cryptocurrencies and especially to Bitcoin,\u201d while also providing the following addendum attributed to CoinDesk author Megan DeMatteo:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince then, thousands of new altcoins \u2026 have been created and added into the crypto ecosystem. &#8220;Altcoin&#8221; refers to any type of cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ethereum stans (Merriam-Webster added that one in 2019, meaning \u201can extremely or excessively enthusiastic and devoted fan\u201d) would disagree; they\u2019ve long contended that Ethereum shouldn\u2019t be lumped together with the other altcoins, given its primacy as the largest smart contract platform by a wide margin.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019d best avoid Investopedia too, who currently defines altcoins as: \u201call cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin (BTC).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk\/companies\/news\/990134\/the-merge-latest-news-on-ethereum-s-landmark-upgrade-990134.html\" rel=\"noopener\">The Merge<\/a> will result in the <strong>flippening<\/strong> (that fabled moment when ETH overtakes BTC as the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation) and the dictionary will eat its words.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Metaverse\u2019 has also made it into Merriam-Webster with this definition: \u201cA persistent virtual environment that allows access to and interoperability of multiple individual virtual realities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure that will sate the uninitiated, though this quote from writer Edd Gent offers some clarity:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#013;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo its proponents, the metaverse is the natural evolution of the internet. They envisage a sprawling network of interconnected virtual worlds for such diverse activities as gaming, watching live entertainment\u2026 and collaborating on design projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#013;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can also visit a rudimentary Eiffel Tower or La Sagrada Familia, but MS seems to have missed the memo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u00a0The image used by Mark Zuckerberg when launching Meta\u2019s Horizon Worlds metaverse was called basic by some, cursed by others \u2013 Source: about.fb.com\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.proactiveinvestors.com\/CKEditor\/2022\/256\/zucc.webp\" style=\"width: 1440px;height: 988px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:9px\">\u00a0The image used by Mark Zuckerberg when launching Meta\u2019s Horizon Worlds metaverse was called basic by some, cursed by others \u2013 Source: about.fb.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also added was \u2018unbanked\u2019 which, while not strictly a crypto-related term, has been co-opted by the community as a badge of honour and rallying cry against traditional finance.<\/p>\n<p>As in \u201c<em>Unbank Yourself<\/em>\u201d, the company motto of Celsius Network, typically seen splashed across founder Alex Mashinsky\u2019s t-shirts.<\/p>\n<p>That was until Celsius crashed and burned and the <em>un<\/em>banked became <em>in<\/em>solvent, sadly at the expense of dedicated retail investors.<\/p>\n<p>If we\u2019re stretching, terraform, which was just added, could be considered a crypto-related term, as in: <em>Terraform Labs just crashed the entire crypto economy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other personal favourites just added:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Adorkable<\/strong> <em>informal<\/em>: socially awkward or quirky in a way that is endearing<\/li>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<li><strong>Greenwash<\/strong> <em>verb<\/em>: to make (something, such as a product, policy, or practice) appear to be more environmentally friendly or less environmentally damaging than it really<\/li>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<li><strong>Hoglet<\/strong> <em>chiefly British<\/em>: a baby hedgehog<\/li>\n<p>&#013;<\/p>\n<li><strong>Yeet<\/strong> <em>interjection, slang<\/em>: used to express surprise, approval, or excited enthusiasm<\/li>\n<p>&#013;\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proactiveinvestors.com\/companies\/news\/992573\/eth-d-off-merriam-webster-throws-shade-on-ethereum-992573.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ethereum\u2019s native cryptocurrency ether (ETH) is an altcoin.
