Since Merriam-Webster has validated a number of internet catchphrases and colloquialisms the modern youth today\u00a0coin by including them in the dictionary, language elitists will have to get pretty chill with them fast.<\/p>\n
Merriam-Webster<\/a> has recently added 370 new words to its lexicon, which, for good or bad, correspond to the modern era, with terms relating to the global health crisis, the war in Ukraine, the so-called \u201cbear market,\u201d and rapidly changing technology.<\/p>\n The oldest dictionary publisher in the United States is making space for crypto.<\/p>\n \u201cAltcoin\u201d and \u201cmetaverse\u201d are likely the most pertinent additions for crypto fans among the new terms added.<\/p>\n The addition of \u201cmetaverse\u201d comes as no surprise, as Facebook have been hogging the headlines about its aggressive foray into the virtual domain. \u201cAltcoins\u201d refer to all cryptocurrencies besides Bitcoin.<\/p>\n \u201cWords provide a window into our ever-changing language and culture, and they are only added to the dictionary when there is clear and sustained evidence of their use,\u201d <\/strong>Peter Sokolowski, editor-at-large for Merriam-Webster.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n This year, among others, Merriam-Webster added the following:<\/p>\n dumbphone<\/strong> <\/em>: a mobile gadget lacking advanced features<\/p>\n yeet :\u00a0<\/strong>interjection, slang<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 used to express surprise, approval, or excited enthusiasm<\/p>\n laggy<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0:<\/strong> having a slow or delayed response<\/p>\n greenwashing<\/strong><\/em> : a marketing tactic used by companies or organizations<\/p>\n lewk<\/em><\/strong> : fashion looks or style<\/p>\n sus<\/em> <\/strong>: suspicious, suspect<\/p>\n janky<\/em> <\/strong>: of very substandard quality<\/p>\n The list of new words contains additions that vividly depict how the past few years have transpired for everyone.<\/p>\n The term \u201cbooster,\u201d which became popular after the COVID-19 pandemic, has its own entry in Merriam-Webster\u2019s book,\u00a0as do \u201cfalse positive\u201d and \u201cfalse negative\u201d lab test results.<\/p>\n Other terms on the list will serve as constant reminders of the the economy\u2019s condition in 2022, such as \u201cshrinkflation,\u201d the practice of lowering a product\u2019s amount or volume while offering it at the same price, and \u201cside hustle,\u201d which means any type of job done in addition to one\u2019s full-time employment.<\/p>\n On its website, Merriam-Webster has also included some delectable entries like \u201cpumpkin spice\u201d and \u201cbirria.\u201d<\/p>\n According to Google Trends, \u201cMetaverse\u201d is the most searched term in the following five nations: Singapore (No. 1), Turkey, China, Cyprus, and the UAE.<\/p>\n There are approximately 20,000 cryptocurrencies that are considered alternatives to established cryptocurrencies, most notably Bitcoin.<\/p>\n In 2021, crypto-related technologies such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) were deemed the Word of the Year by Collins Dictionary.<\/p>\n NFTs play an important role in the metaverse because they help provide a neutral element for acquiring digital assets that are transferable between virtual environments.<\/p>\n \u201cSome of these words will inspire or amuse, others may trigger debate.
