As you might expect, our decision to encourage Lachlan Murdoch\u2019s threatened legal action<\/a> in response to our coverage of the January 6 committee hearings has received attention around the world, particularly in the US. There have also been some notable gaps in the coverage here in Australia. <\/p>\n

The New York Times <\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Grey Lady was already good enough to run an advertisement from Crikey<\/em><\/a> setting out our argument \u2014 as we\u2019ll get into later, not everyone in Australia has been so generous. The NYT<\/em> followed this up with a write-up<\/a> under the headline \u201cAustralian News Site Tells Lachlan Murdoch: Sue Us Already\u201d:<\/p>\n

Lachlan Murdoch, the chief executive of the Fox Corporation, has repeatedly accused a small Australian news site of defaming him in a column that claimed links between the Murdoch family and the Jan 6 Capitol riot.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the news organisation, Crikey<\/em>, responded: Go ahead, sue us.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Axios<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Axios<\/em>, dot point enthusiasts and the best place to find content that turns a Donald Trump interview into a powerful visual representation of the stages of grief<\/a>, also covered the saga, in characteristically brisk<\/a> style. Under the subheading \u201cWhy it matters\u201d, it says \u201cMurdoch\u2019s complaint is ironic since Fox News is vigorously defending itself in the US from\u00a0defamation lawsuits<\/a>\u00a0brought by voting technology companies Dominion and Smartmatic.\u201d <\/p>\n

NPR<\/strong><\/h2>\n

NPR\u2019s headline<\/a> may be our favourite: \u201cFox CEO Lachlan Murdoch threatened Aussie news site \u2018Crikey.\u2019 It\u2019s fighting back\u201d. The US public broadcaster also touched on the role of Australia\u2019s defamation law in all this: \u201cIn the written text of their ad, the two men [Crikey<\/em> editor-in-chief Peter Fray and Private Media Chairman Eric Beecher] suggested they wanted it to serve as a test of Australian defamation laws, which, they wrote, \u2018are too restrictive\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
