{"id":26116,"date":"2022-08-16T10:08:34","date_gmt":"2022-08-16T10:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=26116"},"modified":"2022-08-16T10:08:34","modified_gmt":"2022-08-16T10:08:34","slug":"final-week-of-the-bear-rally-5-things-to-know-in-bitcoin-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=26116","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Final week of the bear rally\u2019 \u2014 5 things to know in Bitcoin this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-v-28d77a7a=\"\">\n<p>Bitcoin (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-price\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a>) enters a new week with a bang after sealing its highest weekly close since mid-June \u2014 can the good times continue?<\/p>\n<p>After a volatile weekend, BTC\/USD managed to restrict losses into the later portion of the weekend to produce a solid green candle on weekly timeframes.<\/p>\n<p>In what could shape up to be the last \u201cquiet\u201d week of the summer, bulls have time on their hands in the absence of major macro market drivers involving the United States Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentals remain strong on Bitcoin, which is due to an increase in its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-for-beginners\/how-to-mine-bitcoin-a-beginners-guide-to-mine-btc\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-for-beginners\/how-to-mine-bitcoin-a-beginners-guide-to-mine-btc\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">mining<\/a> difficulty for the second time in a row in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>On derivatives markets, encouraging signs are also present, with higher price levels accompanied by bullish data over sentiment. <\/p>\n<p>The question for hodlers now is thus how robust the rally is and whether it is just that: a bullish countermove within a broader bear market.<\/p>\n<p>Cointelegraph presents five factors which may influence price this week and help decide on Bitcoin\u2019s next steps.<\/p>\n<h2>Bitcoin embraces volatility after multi-week high close<\/h2>\n<p>At around $24,300, the Aug. 14 weekly close was the best in two months for BTC\/USD. <\/p>\n<p>The weekly chart shows a steady grind upwards continuing to take shape after the June lows, and last week\u2019s candle totaled around $1,100 or 4.8%.<\/p>\n<p>An impressive move by 2022, the gains sparked some volatility overnight into the first Wall Street trading day of the week, BTC\/USD continuing to hit $25,200 on exchanges before reversing noticeably under the weekly close level.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-08\/d23a7533-ee25-42c1-b306-786efb29c0c4.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>BTC\/USD 1-week candle chart (Bitstamp). Source: TradingView<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Such <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-hits-25k-as-bearish-voices-call-btc-price-double-top\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-hits-25k-as-bearish-voices-call-btc-price-double-top\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">moves\u00a0characterized recent days<\/a>, leading to little surprise for traders who continue to act cautiously on shorter timeframes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA new week begins, with the bears stepping in so far to retest some key levels,\u201d popular trading account Crypto Tony <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoTony__\/status\/1559062806892347392\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">summarized<\/a> in part of his latest Twitter update on the day:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOnce again, we should see an interesting week with price action. Been all over the shop on the lower time frames.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Should unpredictability keep coming, the chances of a downmove are clear, according to on-chain monitoring resource Material Indicators.<\/p>\n<p>Following the close, the weekly chart began signaling \u201cdownward momentum,\u201d it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MI_Algos\/status\/1558978782907752448\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">warned<\/a>, while daily timeframes were \u201cflat\u201d as per its proprietary trading tools.<\/p>\n<p>Its creator, Material Scientist, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mtrl_Scientist\/status\/1558939011707797510\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">described<\/a> this week as the \u201cfinal week of the bear rally\u201d in his own comments.<\/p>\n<p>Still entertaining a much deeper correction \u2014 perhaps unsurprisingly \u2014 was gold bug Peter Schiff, who maintained that $10,000 was still on the cards.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just to put the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bitcoin?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">#Bitcoin<\/a> rally into perspective, take a look at this chart. The pattern remains very bearish. There&#8217;s both a double top and a head and shoulders top. There&#8217;s a rising wedge forming below the neckline. At a minimum support will be tested below $10K. Look out below! <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OHNhwsgxxs\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/OHNhwsgxxs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Peter Schiff (@PeterSchiff) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterSchiff\/status\/1558841585726529541?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">August 14, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On a longer-term basis, however, fellow trader and analyst Rekt Capital was calm on BTC price action.<\/p>\n<p>A spot price below $25,000, he said, should be used to dollar cost average (DCA) into Bitcoin \u2014 buying a set amount per set period \u2014 until the next block subsidy halving event in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo succeed in Crypto, you need a dollar-cost averaging strategy, an investing thesis, a vision, &amp; patience,\u201d he <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rektcapital\/status\/1558806537195380739\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told<\/a> Twitter followers over the weekend:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy DCA strategy is anything sub $25000. My thesis is based on the 2024 Halving event Vision is seeing Bull peak a ~year post-Halving. Now I\u2019m just patient.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Macro remains on a \u201cknife edge\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>After last week\u2019s United States inflation print, the coming five trading days look comparatively calm from a macro perspective. <\/p>\n<p>The Fed is quiet, leaving only unexpected events in Europe or Asia to impact market performance.<\/p>\n<p>The likelihood of crypto continuing knee-jerk reactions to macro triggers beyond inflation could already be lower than many think, however, according to one popular analyst.<\/p>\n<p>In a fresh market update for his trading suite, DecenTrader Filbfilb <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.decentrader.com\/market_updates\/bitcoin-market-update-positive-cpi-data-what-next\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">eyed<\/a> decreasing correlation between BTC and what he called \u201clegacy markets\u201d more broadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBitcoin was following a high correlation with legacy markets as shown below with the S&amp;P500 in white and NASDAQ in blue, however since reaching the most recent bottom, all of the downside on the legacy markets has been regained and Bitcoin has failed to follow suit,\u201d he wrote alongside a comparative chart.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-08\/ebc40df5-613a-414f-960b-02fe03644c2e.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>BTC\/USD vs. Nasdaq mini futures vs. S&amp;P 500 mini futures chart. Source: TradingView<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since June\u2019s $17,600 lows, Bitcoin has not in fact rallied as strongly as its prior correlation would dictate, Filbfilb added, arguing that spot price should be above $30,000.<\/p>\n<p>The reason lies in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/analysts-assess-the-aftermath-of-the-terra-luna-collapse-cointelegraph-interview\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/analysts-assess-the-aftermath-of-the-terra-luna-collapse-cointelegraph-interview\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/analysts-assess-the-aftermath-of-the-terra-luna-collapse-cointelegraph-interview\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/analysts-assess-the-aftermath-of-the-terra-luna-collapse-cointelegraph-interview\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">Terra\u00a0and Celsius debacles<\/a>, providing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/celsius-network-is-bankrupt-so-why-is-cel-price-is-up-4-000-in-two-months\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/celsius-network-is-bankrupt-so-why-is-cel-price-is-up-4-000-in-two-months\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">something of a perfect storm<\/a> if taken in tandem with concerns over inflation and the Fed\u2019s reaction to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has not changed, is Bitcoin\u2019s propensity to be at the mercy of the Fed\u2019s policy to combat the inflation. Better than anticipated inflation data on Wednesday being the most recent example, which let Bitcoin take a leap north, alongside equities,\u201d the update continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMoving forwards, the CPI data and following monetary policy decisions are going to continue to be paramount in determining what happens next.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Geopolitical factors including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, tensions over Taiwan and the looming European energy crisis provide further risk factors. The macro market situation, Filbfilb concluded, therefore remains on a \u201cknife edge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bucking the trend on the day, meanwhile, is news from China, which enacted a snap rate cut on disappointing economic data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuly\u2019s economic data is very alarming,\u201d Raymond Yeung, Greater China economist at Australia &amp; New Zealand Banking Group Ltd, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-15\/china-central-bank-unexpectedly-cuts-key-rate-to-boost-growth?sref=323RPL5z\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told<\/a> Bloomberg in response:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAuthorities need to deliver a full-fledged support from property to Covid policy in order to arrest further economic decline.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lex Moskovski, CEO of Moskovski Capital, meanwhile,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mskvsk\/status\/1559025061746642945\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">forecasted<\/a>\u00a0that all central banks would end up lowering, not raising, interest rates:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey all will pivot,\u201d he reacted.<\/p>\n<h2>Funding rates healthy despite run to $25,000<\/h2>\n<p>Taking a look at the impact of current spot price action on trading habits, meanwhile, it appears that conditions may still favor further upside.<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing derivatives markets, Philip Swift, a builder at DecenTrader and founder of data resource Look Into Bitcoin, highlighted negative funding rates.<\/p>\n<p>Indicating increasing conviction among traders that downside is due, moderate negative rates are, in fact, often the foundation for further gains. This is because the market expects downside and does not overly bet on gains materializing, allowing for short positions to be \u201csqueezed\u201d by smarter money.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin, along with crypto markets in general, has a habit of doing the exact opposite of that which is expected by the majority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteresting to see Funding Rate dip negative at times on this recent grind up for $BTC,\u201d Swift <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PositiveCrypto\/status\/1559036539094671362\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">commented<\/a>, uploading a chart showing price behavior during similar setups in the past:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cNote how price has pumped after each occasion.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-08\/83624a69-3d65-4df5-8b1c-f916610dee1a.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>BTC\/USD funding rates annotated chart. Source: Philip Swift\/ Twitter<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, data from analytics resource Coinglass <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coinglass.com\/funding\/BTC\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">showed<\/a> the extent of negative funding relative to the weeks after the June spot price lows.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-08\/1f07d927-48ee-4474-8b78-5ec8dcbde9bd.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>BTC funding rates chart. Source: Coinglass<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Difficulty due a second straight increase<\/h2>\n<p>For Bitcoin network fundamentals, meanwhile, it is a case of slow recovery rather than a race higher.<\/p>\n<p>The latest data from statistics resource BTC.com <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/btc.com\/stats\/diff\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">shows<\/a> miners gradually returning to historical levels of activity.<\/p>\n<p>Difficulty, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/largest-difficulty-drop-since-july-2021-5-things-to-know-in-bitcoin-this-week\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/largest-difficulty-drop-since-july-2021-5-things-to-know-in-bitcoin-this-week\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">after months of decline<\/a>, is set to increase for the second time in a row at the upcoming automated readjustment this week.<\/p>\n<p>While modest, the forecast 0.9% increase shows that competition among miners is nonetheless increasing and that higher prices are cathartic to what has been a highly pressured part of the Bitcoin ecosystem this year.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, hash rate estimates \u2014 an expression of the processing power dedicated to mining \u2014 remain flat below 200 exahashes per second (EH\/s).<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-08\/b4591e7d-4c5d-4ea7-bdf8-ee9bdbcc1cfc.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Bitcoin network fundamentals overview (screenshot). Source: BTC.com<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>4-month highs for Crypto Fear &amp; Greed Index<\/h2>\n<p>A two-month high for Bitcoin spot price action may be nice to look at, but it is not the only aspect of the market clawing back some serious lost ground this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related:\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/top-5-cryptocurrencies-to-watch-this-week-btc-ada-uni-link-chz\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/top-5-cryptocurrencies-to-watch-this-week-btc-ada-uni-link-chz\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">Top 5 cryptocurrencies to watch this week: BTC, ADA, UNI, LINK, CHZ<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the sentiment gauge the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alternative.me\/crypto\/fear-and-greed-index\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Crypto Fear &amp; Greed Index<\/a>, there is less \u201cfear\u201d among crypto market participants than at any point since early April.<\/p>\n<p>The latest data shows the Index, which creates a normalized score from a basket of mood factors, has retraced all the losses engendered by the Terra blowout and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, that score hit 47\/100, its best since April 6, declining to 45\/100 on the day.<\/p>\n<p>While this corresponds to \u201cfear\u201d being the overriding market force, the number is a far cry from the depths of \u201cextreme fear\u201d which lingered for a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-s-longest-extreme-fear-streak-finally-breaks\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-s-longest-extreme-fear-streak-finally-breaks\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">record period of time<\/a> in 2022. The Index\u2019s lows this year were in mid-June, which printed a score of just 6\/100.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-08\/18d33e33-12dd-48d4-becf-42f8eaef7e7d.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Crypto Fear &amp; Greed Index (screenshot).
