{"id":24354,"date":"2022-07-29T20:48:06","date_gmt":"2022-07-29T20:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=24354"},"modified":"2022-07-29T20:48:06","modified_gmt":"2022-07-29T20:48:06","slug":"pro-russia-groups-raise-2m-in-bitcoin-ethereum-to-fund-war-chainalysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=24354","title":{"rendered":"Pro-Russia Groups Raise $2M in Bitcoin, Ethereum to Fund War: Chainalysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color:transparent;background-size:20% 100%;background-image:linear-gradient(to right, rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.04) 1px, transparent 1px);background-position:0%;overflow:visible;font-size:1.2em;line-height:1.58;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Both sides of the Russia-Ukraine conflict are being funded by crypto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Over 54 pro-Russian volunteer groups have cumulatively sourced $2.2 million in cryptocurrency donations to fund war efforts in Ukraine, according to a <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.chainalysis.com\/reports\/pro-russian-crypto-donations-war-in-ukraine\/\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> from Chainalysis on Friday.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=5712\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span class=\"sc-48a5c6a5-4 eylCNa\">blockchain<\/span><\/a> analytics firm said that the vast majority of funds were sent in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=5736\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span class=\"sc-48a5c6a5-4 eylCNa\">Bitcoin<\/span><\/a> ($1.45 million) and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=5726\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\"><span class=\"sc-48a5c6a5-4 eylCNa\">Ethereum<\/span><\/a> ($590,000), with \u201cconsiderable quantities\u201d sent in <span class=\"link\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-tether-usdt-stablecoin\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\">Tether<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"link\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/litecoin\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\">Litecoin<\/a><\/span>, and <span class=\"link\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/dogecoin-crypto-cryptocurrency-guide-how-to-buy-doge\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\">Dogecoin<\/a><\/span> as well. Most of the funds were donated to just a few top groups, with one account receiving over $1 million in crypto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cSocial media posts from the groups indicate that a large portion of these funds are being used to equip paramilitary groups,\u201d Chainalysis said. The report claims that about half of the accounts collecting donations have publicly solicited support for militias located in Donetsk and Luhansk\u2014territories sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">U.S. politicians, such as Senator Elizabeth Warren, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/95387\/warren-crypto-sanctions-bill-russia\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">raised concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> earlier this year about the possibility of Russia using crypto to evade sanctions. Chainalysis today highlighted a pro-Russia group that claims to be doing exactly that. Project Terricon, which has been soliciting donations in crypto to support Russian militia groups, \u201cexplicitly states on their website that they are using cryptocurrency due to the imposition of sanctions,\u201d the report states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Chainalysis co-founder Jony Levin <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NeerajKA\/status\/1504486035178201090\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">argued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> back in March that the potential for crypto to be used to evade sanctions was limited, given that large amounts (of more than $1 billion, for example) could easily be tracked on public blockchain networks. The crypto-tracing firm\u2019s report today, however, suggests that small crypto donations are indeed possible, and perhaps even attractive, for sanctioned entities.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The $2.2 million received by Russian groups, according to Chainalysis, is still dwarfed by the tens of millions <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/94881\/ukraine-millions-crypto-donations-how-being-spent-army\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 ePvUAp\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">donated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> to the Ukrainian side of the war effort in March.
