A long-running animated comedy series has mocked the volatility of cryptocurrencies\u00a0on several occasions. Now, a\u00a0new made-for-streaming movie mocks the crypto industry\u00a0and the celebrities who were used in advertisements.<\/p>\n
What Happened:<\/strong> A new streaming special called \u201cThe Streaming Wars Part 2\u201d from \u201cSouth Park\u201d takes on cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n The movie airs on streaming platform Paramount+ from Paramount Global <\/strong>PARA<\/span>PARAA<\/span>.<\/p>\n According to Decrypt<\/a>, the new movie goes after celebrities including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Larry David<\/strong> and Naomi Osaka,<\/strong> who have promoted cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n The movie mainly takes on Damon, who famously starred in a commercial for Crypto.com<\/a> that featured the tagline \u201cfortune favors the brave.\u201d<\/p>\n In the new movie, the ad from Crypto.com is recreated except instead of holograms of famous moments in history, there is now recycled water.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are living in a severe drought. There simply isn\u2019t a choice anymore,\u201d Damon says in the movie.<\/p>\n Instead of promoting Bitcoin <\/strong><\/a>BTC\/USD<\/span>, Damon is now pedaling a very different product.<\/p>\n \u201cHi, I\u2019m Matt Damon. You\u2019ve heard me talk about the wonders of cryptocurrency and now there\u2019s a company that can give us that new source: Pipi Water!\u201d<\/p>\n The advertisement shows Damon watering his lawn with the new liquid, using it for showers, and enjoying a pint to drink. Other celebrities also endorse the new product.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Streaming Wars Part 2\u201d is the fourth television film for \u201cSouth Park.\u201d<\/p>\n Related Link: Super Bowl LVI Becomes Crypto Bowl With Commercials, Ad Campaigns For Big Game\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n Why It\u2019s Important: <\/strong>This isn\u2019t the first time Damon has been the target of \u201cSouth Park\u201d creators Trey Parker<\/strong> and Matt Stone.<\/strong> Damon was a featured character they poked fun at in their movie \u201cTeam America: World Police.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSouth Park\u201d also took on cryptocurrency and Bitcoin<\/a> in the 2021 \u201cSouth Park\u201d special movie episode \u201cPost COVID.\u201d In a scene that showed the characters 40 years in the future, Stan was at a hotel and asked to pay in Bitcoin. The movie aired on Paramount+ on Nov. 25, 2021.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s the future, we\u2019ve all decided centralized banking is rigged, so we trust more in fly-by-night Ponzi schemes,\u201d a clerk tells Stan.<\/p>\n Damon was also referenced in a 2022 episode called \u201cPajama Day\u201d with one of the main character’s classmates saying, \u201cMy dad said he listened to Matt Damon and lost all his money.\u201d<\/p>\n Bitcoin was trading at over $57,000 back on Nov. 25, 2021 when the show first referenced the cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $20,947, making it an easy target for the comedy show.<\/p>\n Parker and Stone signed a deal<\/a> with Paramount in 2021 for six more seasons of \u201cSouth Park\u201d that also included the addition of 14 movies for the Paramount+ streaming platform.
