However, with Ethereum\u2019s average gas fees coming down to 0.0015 ETH, the narrative is set to change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The average transaction fee on the Ethereum blockchain fell down to 0.0015 ETH or $1.57 \u2014 a number previously seen in December 2020. However, starting in January 2021, Ethereum\u2019s gas fees surged owing to the hype around <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/nonfungible-tokens-for-beginners\/what-are-nfts-and-why-are-they-revolutionizing-the-art-world\" rel=\"noopener\">nonfungible tokens (NFT)<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/defi-101\/defi-a-comprehensive-guide-to-decentralized-finance\" rel=\"noopener\">decentralized finance (DeFi)<\/a> and a promising bull market.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-07\/42dce4a4-8c85-4bd1-be9e-a6d0c33344cd.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Ethereum average transaction fee YTD. Source: BitInfoCharts<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For nearly two years, between Jan. 2021 and May 2022, the average gas fee required by the Ethereum network was roughly $40, with May 1, 2022 recording the highest gas cost of $196.638 \u2014 as evidenced by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bitinfocharts.com\/comparison\/ethereum-transactionfees.html#3y\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">data<\/a> from BitInfoCharts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Supporting this sudden drop in gas prices, Cointelegraph uncovered on Saturday that the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/nft-hype-evidently-dead-as-daily-sales-in-june-2022-dip-to-one-year-lows\" rel=\"noopener\">daily NFTs sales have also dropped to one-year lows<\/a>. The NFT ecosystem recorded its worst performance of the year in June as the total number of daily sales fell to roughly 19,000 with an estimated value of $13.8 million.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-07\/2621115f-de1e-42fe-96d2-40f9f7c4a1cf.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Number of daily NFT sales between June 2021 &#8211; June 2022. Source: NonFungible<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In November 2021, back when numerous investors reported outrageous gas fees, Ethereum co-founder <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/top-people-in-crypto-and-blockchain-2022\/vitalik-buterin\" rel=\"noopener\">Vitalik Buterin<\/a> published a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/vitalik-buterin-proposes-calldata-limit-per-block-to-lower-eth-gas-costs\" rel=\"noopener\">decrease-cost-and-cap proposal to reduce unprecedented levels of strain on the network<\/a>. Buterin had proposed a short-term solution to further cut rollup costs by introducing a calldata limit per block to lower ETH gas costs.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/ethereum-liquidity-provider-xcarnival-negotiates-return-of-50-stolen-eth\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Related: Ethereum liquidity provider XCarnival negotiates return of 50% stolen ETH<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ethereum liquidity provider XCarnival recovered 1,467 ETH just a day after suffering an exploit that drained 3,087 ETH, worth roughly $3.8 million, from the protocol.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">XCarnival was attacked on June 26, 2022 and suspended part of the protocol.
