{"id":15935,"date":"2022-05-06T08:17:19","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T08:17:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=15935"},"modified":"2022-05-06T08:17:19","modified_gmt":"2022-05-06T08:17:19","slug":"someone-is-blowing-up-bitcoin-sees-2022-volume-record-amid-hopes-capitulation-is-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=15935","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Someone is blowing up&#8217; \u2014 Bitcoin sees 2022 volume record amid hopes capitulation is over"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-v-2a0745c6=\"\">\n<p>Bitcoin (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-price\" rel=\"noopener\">BTC<\/a>) dipping below $36,000 \u201csmells like capitulation,\u201d one trader says as suspicion mounts over U.S. stock markets.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoMichNL\/status\/1522331669054775297\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tweet<\/a> on May 6, Cointelegraph contributor Micha\u00ebl van de Poppe suggested that the BTC price was at least giving \u201cserious signals.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Analyst: Stocks saw &#8220;forced liquidation&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>After <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-price-hits-10-week-lows-as-40k-spike-becomes-nasty-bull-trap\" rel=\"noopener\">plunging to 10-week lows<\/a>\u00a0in line with equities on the May 5 Wall Street trading session, Bitcoin bounced at levels last seen in February. <\/p>\n<p>The downturn in both crypto and stocks, which followed an initial bounce the day prior on the back of expected rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, appeared to be more than traders bargained for.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 finished the day down 3.5%, while the Nasdaq 100 ended down 5%. Outside stocks, U.S. 10-year Treasury futures shed 1%, a rare combination which gave some market participants pause for thought.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Goepfert, founder of Sundial Capital Research, noted that such a chain of events had only occurred twice in the past quarter century \u2014 during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and the March 2020 COVID crash. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone is blowing up, and this is forced liquidation,\u201d he <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jasongoepfert\/status\/1522285687566909442\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told<\/a> Twitter followers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There have been 2 days in the past 25 years when S&amp;P 500 futures were down 3% and 10-year Treasury futures down 1%:<\/p>\n<p>October 9, 2008<br \/>March 18, 2020<\/p>\n<p>Someone is blowing up, and this is forced liquidation.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jason Goepfert (@jasongoepfert) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jasongoepfert\/status\/1522285687566909442?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">May 5, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As such, the chain reaction roping in Bitcoin could have been the capitulation event that many had previously said was necessary as a result of changing U.S. economic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat smells like capitulation to me or at least some serious signals overall,\u201d Van de Poppe commented.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the dip had also produced the highest-volume 4-hour candle since early December on BTC\/USD. Volume, as Cointelegraph <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/fed-will-determine-the-fate-of-the-market-5-things-to-know-in-bitcoin-this-week\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, was a key aspect which needed to return in order to produce a more convincing capitulation event.<\/p>\n<p>Data from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pro.cointelegraph.com\/?via=markets&amp;_ga=2.142027444.742658523.1640948929-762064149.1640948929\" rel=\"noopener\">Cointelegraph Markets Pro<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/BTCUSD\/?exchange=BINANCE\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TradingView<\/a>\u00a0meanwhile showed relative calm returning to Bitcoin markets overnight.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-05\/151bd8dd-b5da-459c-b508-0991c150701e.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>BTC\/USD 1-hour candle chart (Bitstamp). Source: TradingView<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>BTC long liquidations near January highs<\/h2>\n<p>Assessing the impact of the dip on hodlers, however, it appeared that a full market reset had not resulted from the day\u2019s losses.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related:\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/27k-max-pain-bitcoin-price-is-ultimate-buy-the-dip-opportunity-says-research\" rel=\"noopener\">$27K &#8216;max pain&#8217; Bitcoin price is ultimate buy-the-dip opportunity, says research<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Liquidations remained fairly tame across cryptocurrencies, BTC accounting for $190 million over the 24 hours to the time of writing. This was the highest daily tally for several months, but did not surpass January&#8217;s cascade to $32,000. <\/p>\n<p>The remaining $200 million came from altcoin pairs, data from on-chain monitoring resource <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coinglass.com\/LiquidationData\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Coinglass<\/a> showed.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-05\/4e8faac3-db81-48b4-9695-8f85134cf0c4.png\" \/><figcaption style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Crypto liquidations chart.
