Former Nintendo<\/a> of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aim\u00e9<\/a> has endorsed blockchain for gaming, stating that he\u2019s \u201ca believer\u201d in the technology.<\/p>\n A blockchain is a digital ledger of transactions that allows users to own and sell digital items as NFTs.<\/p>\n Numerous game companies have already started selling digital items as NFTs, including Konami<\/a> and Atari<\/a>, though this has attracted criticism from some due to the format\u2019s high carbon footprint and what many perceive to be cynical implementation.<\/p>\n Speaking during a SXSW panel<\/a> this week, former Nintendo Boss Fils-Aim\u00e9 said he believed blockchain could work in gaming if it\u2019s implemented from a player\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n Fils-Aim\u00e9 used Nintendo title Animal Crossing as an example, stating that he believed it could appeal to players if they were able to profit from some of their creations in the game.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m a believer in blockchain,\u201d he said. \u201cI think blockchain as a technology is really compelling. I\u2019m also a believer in the concept of \u2018play to own\u2019 within video games.<\/p>\n \u201cI say this as a player where I may have invested 50 hours into a game, 100 hours into a game, or there are some games where I\u2019ve invested 300 hours\u2026 when I\u2019m ready to move on to something else, wouldn\u2019t it be great to monetise what I built?<\/p>\n \u201cI bet I\u2019d have some takers here today if I wanted to sell my Animal Crossing island from the latest Nintendo Switch<\/a> version. I\u2019d like to be able to monetise that. Blockchain technology embedded in the code and into development would enable me to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n He added: \u201cSo I\u2019m a believer in the technology and where it\u2019s headed. But I say that in the context of, it needs to make sense for the player, it can\u2019t just be an approach by the developer that it\u2019s interesting or a way for them to make more money.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the end, it\u2019s got to be good for the player, but I see an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
