{"id":11682,"date":"2022-03-24T19:08:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-24T19:08:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=11682"},"modified":"2022-03-24T19:08:51","modified_gmt":"2022-03-24T19:08:51","slug":"secret-service-agent-warns-east-texans-of-cybercrimes-involving-cryptocurrency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=11682","title":{"rendered":"Secret Service agent warns East Texans of cybercrimes involving cryptocurrency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">TYLER, Texas (KLTV) &#8211; The U.S. Secret Service is warning East Texans of an uptick in cybercrimes involving cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Bill Mack, Resident Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service\u2019s Tyler Office, said these involve a wide variety of scams; including romance scams, arrest warrant scams, and tech scams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThese victims are being told to often pay through cryptocurrency ATMs,\u201d Mack said. \u201cThey\u2019re often being directed to these specific ATMs and then they\u2019re putting the money in the ATM and sending it to the address provided by the criminal and then it\u2019s gone very rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Mack said the criminals are part of organized groups that operate globally from a variety of countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThey are professionals at this,\u201d Mack said. \u201cThis is what they do full-time. It\u2019s essentially their job to scam people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Due to the nature of these crimes, Mack said it can be rather difficult to recover the money lost in these scams. He also said the criminals prey on a certain segment of the population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThe elderly are disproportionately affected by this,\u201d Mack said. \u201cEspecially tech scams and scams that play on certain emotions like fear and love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Mack said the scams often start with the victim visiting a dating or social media website. He said they then come into contact with profiles that are run by scammers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cEventually the scammer will build up the confidence or a relationship with the victim and eventually parlay that into conversations about seeking money for a variety of different things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Mack said some people are also targeted specifically using information obtained on the dark web.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Better Business Bureau has scheduled a news conference to discuss these crimes in East Texas. The news conference is set for Thursday, March 24, at 2:30 p.m. \u00a0It will feature Agent Mack, an FBI agent, and a senior staff attorney with the Federal Trade Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\"><i>Copyright 2022 KLTV.
