Kiln will be the last Merge testnet \u2014\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/eth2-is-no-more-after-ethereum-foundation-ditches-name-in-rebrand\" data-amp=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/eth2-is-no-more-after-ethereum-foundation-ditches-name-in-rebrand\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">formerly Ethereum 2.0<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0before existing public testnets are upgraded. \u201cMerge\u201d involves taking Ethereum\u2018s Execution Layer from the existing proof-of-work (PoW) layer and merging it with the Consensus Layer from the Beacon chain, turning the blockchain into a proof-of-stake (PoS) network. The Foundation <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/2022\/03\/14\/kiln-merge-testnet\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">writes<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis merge signals the culmination of six years of research and development in Ethereum and will result in a more secure network, predictable block times, and a 99.98%+ reduction in power use when it is released on mainnet later in 2022.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, it appears not everything went according to plan during testing. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/explorer.kiln.themerge.dev\/block\/55138\/transactions#txs\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">According<\/a> to Kiln Explorer, there were several errors relating to contract creation. In a follow-up tweet, Beiko said a client was not <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimBeiko\/status\/1503756418788298756\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">producing<\/a> blocks consistently, though \u201cthe network is stable, with &gt;2\/3rd of validators correctly finalizing.\u201d A fellow Ethereum developer, Marius Van Der Wijden,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vdWijden\/status\/1503808967629283328\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">commented<\/a> on the matter as well, pointing out that Prysm was proposing bad blocks during the transition on Kiln.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prysm is a Go programming language variant for implementing Ethereum Consensus specification. As <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vdWijden\/status\/1503808967629283328\/photo\/1\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told<\/a> by Van Der Wijden, it turns out one block had the incorrect base fee per gas value, and substituting it with the actual expected base value appears to have solved the problem. On its official roadmap, the Ethereum Foundation states that the Merge upgrade will be <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/upgrades\/merge\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">shipped<\/a> by the end of Q2 2022.
