Source: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/consensys.net\/blog\/quorum\/what-is-eip-1559-how-will-it-change-ethereum\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"noopener\">ConsenSys<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">This burn mechanism has also fueled the \u201c<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/78126\/shark-tank-mr-wonderful-shills-ethereum-ultra-sound-money\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 kVliVL\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">ultra-sound money<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201d meme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The meme follows that when there is a spike in activity on Ethereum, it is possible that the destruction of the circulating supply could outpace the amount issued via block rewards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">This creates a deflationary effect in which there are fewer and fewer Ethereum on the market to buy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">During a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/95368\/ethereum-2-merge-launch-lay-to-rest-energy-usage-concerns-joe-lubin\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 kVliVL\" rel=\"noopener\">fireside chat<\/a> during this year\u2019s Camp Ethereal, Joe Lubin, Ethereum co-founder and CEO of ConsenSys\u00a0 (which funds an editorially independent <i>Decrypt<\/i>) again <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/95368\/ethereum-2-merge-launch-lay-to-rest-energy-usage-concerns-joe-lubin\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 kVliVL\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">reminded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> that yet another upgrade will bring this particular meme into even greater focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left;padding-bottom:16px;margin-bottom:16px;border-bottom:1px solid #EBEBEB\" class=\"sc-e93b592e-2 dsiLcY\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Burned Ethereum and the \u2018Consensus Layer\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Alongside the London Hard Fork, Ethereum is also inching towards its most comprehensive upgrade yet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Recently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/91149\/ethereum-foundation-kills-eth-2-consensus-layer-rebrand\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 kVliVL\" rel=\"noopener\">rebranded<\/a> to \u201cConsensus Layer,\u201d <span class=\"link\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-ethereum-2-0\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 kVliVL\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethereum 2.0<\/a><\/span> would improve the network\u2019s transaction speed, lower costs, and \u201cwill lay to rest Ethereum\u2019s carbon or energy footprint problem,\u201d according to Lubin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro font-normal text-lg sm:text-xl sm:leading-9 tracking-px text-body\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The upgrade will shift Ethereum away from a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=5733\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 kVliVL\"><span class=\"sc-d50daa3a-4 dpvmRi\">proof-of-work<\/span><\/a> (PoW) consensus mechanism, something that <span class=\"link\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-bitcoin-four-minute-instant-guide-explainer\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 kVliVL\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin<\/a><\/span> also uses to validate transactions, to a different model called <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&amp;p=5733\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 kVliVL\"><span class=\"sc-d50daa3a-4 dpvmRi\">proof-of-stake<\/span><\/a> (PoS).
