{"id":10932,"date":"2022-03-17T06:37:24","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T06:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=10932"},"modified":"2022-03-17T06:37:24","modified_gmt":"2022-03-17T06:37:24","slug":"bitcoin-and-ethereum-use-more-energy-than-many-developed-nations-but-are-they-bad-for-the-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/egrowonline.com\/?p=10932","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin and Ethereum use more energy than many developed nations, but are they bad for the environment?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/the-decrypting-story\/what-is-blockchain-technology-blocks-distributed-ledgers-nodes\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">Blockchain technology<\/a> and its various use cases &#8211; crypto, NFTs, DeFi, DAOs, etc &#8211; are emerging as transformative forces in private and public sector operations. <\/p>\n<p>However, various industries have been coming under the scanner for their <strong>consumption of energy resources, <\/strong>and blockchain is no exception.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/the-decrypting-story\/what-is-bitcoin-btc-transactions-satoshi-nakamoto\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin <\/a>&#8211; the first cryptoasset built on blockchain &#8211; and its network reportedly consume <strong>91 terawatt-hours of electricity per year<\/strong>, as per a <em>New York Times<\/em> story. In fact, this is more than what <strong>Finland<\/strong>, a nation of <strong>5.5 million<\/strong>, uses annually.<\/p>\n<p>Other reports claim <strong>The Netherlands, Argentina and The United Arab Emirates <\/strong>all use less energy annually than Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"font-experiment-bq\"><p>An earlier estimate by The University of Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF) projected Bitcoin&#8217;s total energy consumption was around 130-terawatt hours annually.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>(The University of Cambridge maintains a Bitcoin electricity consumption index (which is updated every 24 hours). It can be accessed <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/ccaf.io\/cbeci\/index\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/the-decrypting-story\/what-is-ethereum-eth-vitalik-buterin-smart-contracts\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethereum <\/a>&#8211; the most popular blockchain network for <strong>Decentralised App (DApp) development <\/strong>&#8211; has also been running a highly energy-intensive global platform. An <em>Investopedia<\/em> article in late 2021 pointed out that the Ethereum network uses <strong>99.6 terawatt-hours of electricity each year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Public opinion on Bitcoin and Ethereum\u2019s energy use is largely polarised. <\/p>\n<p>Those that believe Bitcoin (and other cryptoassets) are scams or channels for money laundering, usually maintain that their energy consumption is unnecessary and far too wasteful.<\/p>\n<p>Those adopting Bitcoin and Ethereum as decentalised platforms for storing their wealth, interacting with decentralised networks, hedging against inflation, etc think the energy spend is required.<\/p>\n<h2>Consensus mechanisms in blockchain<\/h2>\n<p>Many ardent Bitcoin believers and Ethereum enthusiasts admit the new generation of upcoming, energy-efficient blockchain networks can possibly set the stage for a greener blockchain revolution.<\/p>\n<p><em>But how are these new blockchain platforms different from Bitcoin and Ethereum, and why can they be more energy-efficient?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"font-experiment-bq\"><p>The answer lies in the mechanisms they use to achieve consensus among their participants.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Bitcoin and Ethereum currently rely on a <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/the-decrypting-story\/proof-of-work-proof-of-stake-crypto-blockchain\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">Proof-of-Work (PoW) <\/a>consensus system, where participants on the network must use advanced hardware to <strong>expend a significant amount of computational power and energy<\/strong> to solve a puzzle to validate a blockchain transaction.<\/p>\n<p>PoW blockchains feature competitive mining processes, where higher amounts of computational power and cheaper energy sources (which are often dirtier) often translate into higher miner rewards.<\/p>\n<p>Newer chains like<strong> BNB Chain, Solana, Tezos, Algorand, Cardano<\/strong>, and many others use a <strong>Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus<\/strong>, where participants must lock a certain amount of the network\u2019s native token as their stake in order to be selected as a validator.<\/p>\n<p>As such, there is no significant expenditure of energy, and PoS chains do not require high amounts of computational power to solve puzzles. They are more energy-efficient, affordable, and open to participation for a larger number of users.<\/p>\n<p><em>More information on PoW and PoS consensus can be found in this <\/em><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/the-decrypting-story\/proof-of-work-proof-of-stake-crypto-blockchain\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>explainer article<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"i-amphtml-intrinsic-sizer\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyBoZWlnaHQ9IjQwMCIgd2lkdGg9IjgwMCIgeG1sbnM9Imh0dHA6Ly93d3cudzMub3JnLzIwMDAvc3ZnIiB2ZXJzaW9uPSIxLjEiLz4=\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"i-amphtml-intrinsic-sizer\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyBoZWlnaHQ9IjQwMCIgd2lkdGg9IjgwMCIgeG1sbnM9Imh0dHA6Ly93d3cudzMub3JnLzIwMDAvc3ZnIiB2ZXJzaW9uPSIxLjEiLz4=\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"disableEmbedPointerEvents\" \/><\/div>\n<h2>Estimating a blockchain\u2019s carbon footprint<\/h2>\n<p>At the outset, Bitcoin and Ethereum\u2019s energy consumption looks alarming, in comparison to other non-blockchain networks like <strong>Visa <\/strong>and <strong>Mastercard<\/strong>, which are significantly faster in terms of <strong>Transactions per Second (TPS) <\/strong>and energy consumption per transaction.<\/p>\n<p>However, critics argue energy consumption by blockchain networks cannot be directly correlated to carbon emissions without factoring in the source of the energy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"font-experiment-bq\"><p>As per a 2021 Harvard Business Review article, while determining energy consumption is relatively straightforward, one cannot extrapolate the associated carbon emissions without knowing the precise energy mix &#8211;\u00a0that is, the makeup of different energy sources used by the computers mining the crypto asset.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the energy used by the entire Bitcoin and Ethereum network can be estimated to a relatively accurate degree, identifying the energy mixes at the various locations where the participant nodes are based is a monumentally challenging, if not impossible, task.<\/p>\n<p>Blockchains are inherently decentralised by design, and their <strong>anonymous participants have no actionable or legal responsibility to reveal the details of their energy mixes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An HBR article notes that \u2018the best estimates of energy production geolocation (from which an energy mix can be inferred) come from the CCAF, which has worked with major mining pools to put together an anonymised dataset of miner locations.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However, not all mining pools are included in the dataset, nor is it always updated, which makes it <strong>near impossible to correctly estimate Bitcoin\u2019s energy mix (and consequently, its carbon footprint).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 2019 <em>Coinshares <\/em>report claimed nearly <strong>73 percent of Bitcoin\u2019s energy consumption was carbon neutral<\/strong>, suggesting that nearly three-fourths of electricity used to run the network came from renewable sources such as hydro power in Southwest China and Scandinavian countries.<\/p>\n<p>The CCAF, however, projected in September 2020 that only <strong>39 percent of Bitcoin\u2019s energy use came from clean sources.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"i-amphtml-intrinsic-sizer\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyBoZWlnaHQ9IjQwMCIgd2lkdGg9IjgwMCIgeG1sbnM9Imh0dHA6Ly93d3cudzMub3JnLzIwMDAvc3ZnIiB2ZXJzaW9uPSIxLjEiLz4=\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"i-amphtml-intrinsic-sizer\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyBoZWlnaHQ9IjQwMCIgd2lkdGg9IjgwMCIgeG1sbnM9Imh0dHA6Ly93d3cudzMub3JnLzIwMDAvc3ZnIiB2ZXJzaW9uPSIxLjEiLz4=\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"disableEmbedPointerEvents\" \/><\/div>\n<h2>Ethereum\u2019s plan to upgrade to PoS<\/h2>\n<p>While the jury is still out in terms of determining the real carbon impact of decentralised networks, <strong>Ethereum is pivoting from PoW to PoS <\/strong>to improve its efficiency in terms of <strong>energy use, TPS, transaction fees, and scalability.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The collective set of upgrades is known as <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/the-decrypting-story\/ethereum-2-blockchain-crypto-proof-of-stake\/amp\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethereum 2.0<\/a>, and will launch in several phases. The first phase \u2014 the <strong>Beacon Chain <\/strong>\u2014 went live in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The Beacon Chain is a PoS network that introduces staking (locking of crypto by the network\u2019s nodes) to the Ethereum blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>At present, the Beacon Chain is separate from the Ethereum Mainnet. <strong>The Merge,<\/strong> expected sometime in 2022, will combine the Beacon Chain with the Ethereum Mainnet. <\/p>\n<p>As a test experiment before the actual Merge, Ethereum recently went live with the <strong>Kiln Testnet <\/strong>&#8211; which is ready to merge with the Beacon chain.<\/p>\n<p>The final phase of Ethereum 2.0 involves <strong>sharding<\/strong>, which is the process of dividing the network into subsets of nodes to improve efficiency.
